The NFL is going all in for enhancing revenue from gambling

There's something depressing about professional sport being only about money. I don't know if it was always the case, or whether I just started noticing in the past decade or two.
agreed. i became a fan before it was mostly like this. i begrudge no one the money they've gotten, but feel that there's a point where it should stop. that point has been passed now with gambling.

I agree. The gambling thing was crossing a line that should never have been crossed.

I often wonder just how much surveillance the NFL now does in order to catch the players the way they have. It would seem to be CIA-level monitoring at
every facility to protect the new revenue stream. And that has to require enormous resources to try to prevent a major scandal -- which seems a
likelihood to me. The guys they are picking off now should serve as a clear warning to the rest, but some guys just can't take a hint.

I imagine the players don't love the fact that they are being monitored constantly even if they never even thought about betting on sports, yet if they
knew of a teammate gambling in violation and ratted on them then they themselves will end up branded.

The League just continues to fuck up, due to excess greed, what was a really good thing and this deal will likely cause them some major grief down the road. I
sometimes wish that I didn't love the Pats the way I do so I could just walk away from following the NFL, but I just watch a lot less neutral games and don't obsess
over the big picture the way I used to. Right now, that's the best I can do.

You are not alone.

i have to think that the nfl doesn't care about us "old school fans" at all. they are after the new hotness, fantasy football people, gambling, overseas fans(ironically, they are probably mostly old school like us)etc. all they get from us is love of the game, maybe some ticket and merchandise purchases. and most teams have oodles of people wanting tickets so they can replace that in a heartbeat.
i understand wanting to grow revenue, but there's a point where completely alienating your good, loyal customers is going to bite you in the ass. i'm not sure relying as heavily on "the new hotness" fans will have staying power.

We are witnessing the "NBA-ification" of the NFL. It has not worked out well for the NBA here in this country. By all measures that sport is half the size it was in terms of fan support. They don't care though. Money is the driver.

The owners should be ashamed of themselves. I wonder where Kraft falls on this? Is he all in on the destruction/revenue gains or is he behind the scenes trying to save some integrity for the NFL? Or is he on the sidelines cashing checks?
