Carter is likely to be good, but Garrett is That Dude, against both the past and the run. He's the closest thing I've seen to Reggie White since Reggie White.
I love the player but you'd have to A) give up a king's ransom in a trade to get him and then B) pay him ~$40 million over his age 30 and 31 seasons before he becomes an UFA.

Or.... they could draft Carter and enjoy multiple seasons where they 3 have players at premium $$$ positions (QB, CB, Edge) playing under rookie deals. With all the money they're sitting on, perhaps pay a diva WR and/or another shutdown CB.

Not sure how much you'd have to give up to get him, for exactly the reasons you state. Before day 5 of the league year you're preventing a big cap hit to Cleveland for a player who doesn't want to be there. After that date, the trade compensation will rise significantly because of the additional dead cap associated with shipping him out of town. Before then? Not at all impossible. Time is against Cleveland here - trading him after day 5 is going to be a problem.

I'm not sold on Carter as Micah Parsons 2.0. He's a bit small to play end, though I like him as a souped-up Kyle Van Noy type. I don't think he's a game wrecker. I like him as a player. He's a blue chip guy, but most years he's top 10-15 type, not top 4. I hope people fall in love with him, and he falls to #4...then the Patriots trade back, collect picks, select 2 OLmen in the first 3 rounds, and 3 in the first 5.

Garret is a great fit for a team that is "this close" and he can be a what potentially puts them over the top. so for his age and salary, "that team" he's worth it. he wouldn't want to come to a rebuilding team and we probably don't want to pay and hope as he ages he doesn't lose it.
will be curious how this plays out for him.
