USA. A Mexican restaurant. We had not yet ordered anything, and the food was already arriving.

Chips. Salsa. Unrequested. Free.

I stopped the waiter. "We have not earned these."

"They just come with the table, man."

They come with the TABLE. In my land, hospitality is a debt. Every gift creates an obligation, weighed carefully, returned in the proper season with interest of feeling. Here, the gift arrives before you have even proven you can pay for dinner.

This is not an appetizer. This is a declaration: we trust you. Eat.

I ate with the gravity the moment deserved. And then — I must report this calmly — the basket emptied, and a new one appeared.

"Did we…?"

"Refill," the waiter said. "It's bottomless."

Bottomless. They have wells of salsa. The supply lines of this nation are beyond anything my ancestors imagined.

My friend warned me. "Don't fill up on chips, dude."

Too late. I had accepted three baskets. Honor demanded each one be finished — an unfinished gift is an insult. By the time my actual food arrived, I was a ruined man.

I was not hungry. I was not comfortable. I had been defeated by a courtesy.

Generosity that arrives before the request cannot be repaid. It can only be survived.

I know the rule now. I have made my peace with the basket. One basket. Two at the most.

Who am I deceiving. There is no number of baskets I would refuse. The trust of a nation is in that salsa, and I intend to honor all of it.

I'm a large proponent of raw, organic coconut oil. Lots of uses. I brush my teeth with it. I'm a guy that has had many cavitites and fillings, and several root canals. I don't eawt sugar hardly at all, but my teeth got pretty fucked up when I was young in a variety of violent encounters, and cracked teeth don't hold up well over decades.

But, I started brushing with raw organic coconut oil about 5 years ago. After brushing, I take a sip of water and swish it around in my mouth, what the folks in the east call "oil pulling".

Now, I did this to cut down on my fluoride intake. Fluoride is bad for you in so many ways, but especially the mind. For that reason, I looked to get away from it as much as possible. So I started brushing with coconut oil.

In the 5 years since, I have not had a single cavity, or any oral problems at all. None. Zero. I'm actually a bit shocked.
 
Was in Lowes and overheard two employees.

E1 "Have you had a lot of questions from customers today?"
E2 "Thankfully not".
E1 " Think Johnny has been out for lunch a bit, and i have been slammed with questions. "

Just struck me as funny.
 
Been watching some BritBox detective shows.
Is it true that English detectives/ cops do not use guns in their work?
It appears they can be interacting with a serial killer without a gun. ????

And for all detective shows, the good guys never turn on the lights when it’s dark when dealing with the scum of the earth.

I think historically the bobbies did not carry guns. Not sure if they do now, but I think the higher ranks do, like detectives. I watch "Patience" on PBS and the detective lady whips it out quite often.

Thanks Musie. :) I'm back at my old job and I work a couple of overnights, so I decided to poke around again and see what's up.
 
Raquel Welch was supposed to play Mary Ann on Giligan’s Island until the producer met Dawn Wells.
