Science Fiction and Fantasy Art

I actually designed scholarly books and book jackets for a year or 2 out of college to help pay extra expenses getting my masters. Granddaughter number one is at 13 amazing with her anime illustrations all her own conception. She like her grandmother wants/wanted to be an architect. Im glad I chose otherwise but she has the world in the palm of her hand. Shes old school, and collects albums lol.

My point is pass it on as actual Art is becoming a lost “Art “ with computers. I’m thoroughly enjoying this thread thanks Tip!

You're welcome.

One of the original images I linked to in the first post in the thread went bad, so I have restored it. It was one of the most iconic Kelly Freas images.

And here's another one from Kelly Freas, just because he's so good:

Digital art is a thing...

Wayne Barlowe did a number of covers for Keith Laumer's interstellar diplomat Jaime Retief.

He's also pretty good at drawing extra-terrestrials.

Rowena Morrill also did some Retief covers.

And lots and lots of others...

Dean Ellis has had his work appear on some of the most well-known science fiction books ever published, including Ray Bradbury's The Illustrated Man, Arthur C. Clarke's Childhood's End, and many others.

@Dee, I get it. I was opposed to it initially...but once you start exploring and experimenting with it, it's more addictive than crack! In a good way... ;) Also, you don't have the mess and storage to deal with as you can print on demand!

A previous post by PatsFan09 mentioned Larry Elmore.

Here are some examples of his work.

I am so glad to see this thread resurrected! Since I am all in on Warhammer 40K recently, which has far too many world renowned artists to pick from, I'll just post some a few pieces of art from the 40K universe, I'll name them where I can;

Even the proverbs within the game are artistic, in my view;

“Each man is a spark in the darkness. Would that we all burn as bright.”

“You came to me asking how my faith survived the Day of Judgement. I will tell you a secret. When the stars fell when the seas boiled and the earth burned, my faith didn’t die. That is when I began to believe. God was real, and he hated us.”

"For every battle honour, a thousand heroes die alone, unsung and unremembered."

“Each man is a spark in the darkness. Would that we all burn as bright.”

Excellent.

Out of all of em, these 2 struck my soul the hardest.

Let's get it on.

Either fully fucking live, to the extreme, it's your life, what better extreme to go to the extreme for? And fight for the future, yours first and go down in a blaze of glory if necessary or die in in irrelevance sitting on the porch watching the world burn.

Fortune favors the bold.

These are great

Thank you for that post, Baron, and for providing the artists' names.

I'm always happy to learn about new artists in the SF&F and related realms, and to see examples of their work.

I probably could have labelled more, but at work doing inventory, I lack the time. There are probably 20 artists well known for their Warhammer 40K art. The game has a base rulebook, plus a crapload of codexes, novels, and other literature, all well illustrated....so many artists over the years.

Kind of like Dungeons & Dragons....so many books associated with the game, and novels, and so on, that many well known artists make their mark over the decades.

Here's the original cover from Kate Wilhelm's Where Late The Sweet Birds Sang. I'll need to go back and re-read it - I read it when I was a teenager and don't recall any of it.

And here's some more M.C. Escher, for those that enjoy such things. :dancingcucumber:

I finally got around to unpacking all my old vinyl and setting up the stereo - it's been almost three years since that part of my life has been in storage.

I have a couple of spoken word albums, one of which is Frank Herbert reading the banquet scene from "Dune."

The album cover was done by Kelly Freas.

Don't know if these count, and I won't spam the thread, but I have been messing around with Stable Diffusion and AI Art and created the following:

The first was inspired by Baron. It combines elements of Edgar Allen Poe, HP Lovecraft, and HR Giger.
The second is SpiderBatMan.
The third is an attempt at some just intricate fantasy art.
The fourth is an attempt at a photo realistic Elven Monk.
