I know it’s a very long article for those who read it. This stood out to me.

I am NOT saying Drs are the SUPPLIERS. They are where MOST get their first taste of the world of pharmaceuticals. All too often people with next to zero incidence of drugs in their life get a script for injury or pain and these things are so powerful and so addictive it changes lives.

They’re too willing to prescribe. And they know the problem out there. So you have to ask why.

Both myself and mikie cited multiple instances in our own health history where these things were virtually pushed. Cmon, wisdom tooth recovery? A 3 stitch umbilical hernia? Where I played competitive ice hockey 7 days later? I really need to be offered Oxy? Then Vicodin?

This is where we differ then. Street drugs are the major cause of substance abusers. It's a combination of availability and peer pressure. Kids too young to know better, especially those with ADD, ADHD or anxiety, are given drugs by friends and say to themselves "It won't happen to me". Only it helps their behavioral problem immediately so they take another and another & before they realize it, they're hooked. Doctors aren't getting these Jr. High Schoolers and High Schoolers addicted. Their friends are doing it.

Prescriptions of narcotics to control post-op pain is the standard of care for adults. Adults have the right to refuse to take them. Even so, the ethical doctor doesn't write a script for enough drug to get people hooked.

I've had experiences with both ethical and non/ethical doctors...there is a good and bad in most everything.

The doctors don't pipe in the drugs either...but, they are a cog in the machine though.

City of Boston to sue drug companies over opioids epidemic
BOSTON - The city of Boston has retained a South Carolina law firm in anticipation of a lawsuit against pharmaceutical companies to recover damages stemming from the opioid epidemic, Mayor Marty Walsh announced Tuesday.

Motley Rice LLC was selected after Boston heard from nine firms interested in representing the city following a request for information issued in February.

Motley Rice will immediately begin to gather relevant information with the intent of filing suit by the fall.

Boston, like so many cities across the country, has invested significant time, money and resources to aggressively attack the opioid crisis from every angle," the Democratic mayor said in a statement. "Now is the time to finally hold the pharmaceutical industry responsible."

The firm already represents many local governments in actions against opioid manufacturers and distributors, including Chicago, Santa Clara County, California, and seven states.

Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey's office last week sued Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin, alleging the Connecticut company downplayed the prescription painkiller's risks.

Purdue said it "vigorously" denies the allegations.

Massachusetts is among roughly two dozen states, including Florida, Nevada, North Carolina, North Dakota, Tennessee and Texas, that have filed suit against drugmakers recently. Counties, municipalities and even hospitals have filed similar lawsuits.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 115 people a day die from an opioid overdose on average.

This has been a long time coming. The manufacturers will deny any wrongdoing and point to the federally and state licensed wholesalers/distributors as well as the federally and state licensed pharmacies/pharmacists for allowing narcs to hit the streets in such great numbers. They'll also point out illegal drugs entering the US from other countries, primarily China, which doesn't give a rat's ass about regulating their counterfeit drug trade.

This is the first step although the real culprits aren't the manufacturers, who are only indirectly responsible. Rather, it's the middle men and the counterfeit drug trade that are directly responsible. The states will then say to the manufacturers "You should have done a better job choosing your wholesalers". To which, the manufacturers will say "You licensed these guys, it's not my responsibility to do the DEA's job by investigating them". Fingers will be pointed and progress will be made towards identifying those wholesalers and pharmacies who have stretched the ethical boundary. Licenses will be yanked, fines will be levied and a few may go to jail but this will take years to play out.

Ultimately the DEA needs more people and more money to do a better job of curtailing the billions of dollars being made from the street trade. And even that doesn't address the drugs being smuggled in from outside the US.

What’s the population?

At any given point in time what percent of said population requires opioid pain killers?

And then why is big pharma even allowed to produce 100, 1000, 10000, 100000 times more product than the need?

I posted an article while we discussed the drug problem previously about the terrifying replacement for Fentanol, the elephant tranquilizer that is like 10,000 times stronger.

How much demand is there for that? How many elephants are getting knocked out per day? Why is big pharma allowed to mass produce?

They are DIRECTLY responsible, by producing FAR more product than needed continually.

yes it should be - all meds not just Narcotics, who knows how viagra works with High Blood pressure pills :coffee:

I don't know about that, but I took it with my iron pills once and faced north all day.

Also, regarding Sudafed, the allergies are so bad this year that the drub labs are turning meth back into Sudafed.
