A large corner was definitely a need, taller receivers were a problem for our CBs. The secondary should look something like this:

CB1: Gonzalez
CB2: Ja. Jones
CB3: Jo. Jones
CB4: M Jones
S1: Dugger
S2: Mills?

The only real question is Mills as we haven't seen him play Safety, and McCourty manned it for so long.

2023 NFL Draft Day 1 Winners​

New England Patriots​

The Patriots, after making a somewhat baffling move by consensus last year with Cole Strange, took the steal of the draft in Oregon’s Christian Gonzalez. Gonzalez was regarded by many as the top cornerback over Devon Witherspoon from Illinois and was ranked CB1 by the consensus.

Of the 70 evaluators who submitted big boards for the consensus board, 60 percent considered him the top cornerback in the draft. He was the only CB universally considered a top 20 overall talent and ranked as a top-five player on 21.4% of boards. The Patriots got as close to a universal steal — at a position of need — as is possible in the NFL Draft.

2023 NFL Draft Day 1 Losers

New York Jets​

The Jets may have had the best move of the pre-draft festivities after trading for Aaron Rodgers, but the draft itself was a big problem. First, the division rival New England Patriots traded out from the pick immediately ahead of them to allow the Steelers to draft Broderick Jones – the last well-regarded offensive lineman with first-round consideration.

Then, they reached for Will McDonald IV, the 33rd-ranked edge rusher by consensus. McDonald is a high-potential player, but they passed on players with even more upside, like Myles Murphy and Nolan Smith. Even selecting an edge rusher was a bit questionable.

I’m sick of watching Stefan Diggs make plays against us.
and watching Myles Bryant getting burnt by some random speedy little guy.

Yeah, I think it has to do with the level of competition rather than a pressing need.

Also BB tends to go for best available rather than reach for a position of need.

The main reason he isn't rated high is because he played for 3 season on an absolutely dismal Vanderbilt team that went 5-27 during that time. No one from that team was going to get high grades. Yet he was still thought to be a round 1 or 2 pick.

Mills played a lot of safety with the eagles. He really had his best season at Safety in 2020

Jalen Mills is not a good player and has never been a good player.
His PFF scores below by year:
2022: 44
2021: 67
2020: 69
2019: 56
2018: 57
2017: 65

If he doesn't have it at FS the Patriots should be prepared to immediately replace him with a backup plan (I mean in the first 2 weeks). Don't mess up the entire defense with a crappy free safety. Man cover-1 does not work if your free safety is bad.

Were those scores at CB? He's not a CB he was always a safety even in college. Philly played him at CB out of necessity.

He played one season at FS that was 2020. Take a deep breath and watch how they use him this season. He is likely to not be the #1 FS anyway. That is likely to be Adrian Phillips. The Pats could also pick up Daniel Scott tonight or tomorrow.

I think this pick allows them to play matchups much better, and use Marcus Jones more opportunistically, which improves the offense as well. If you really don't see the holes in the defensive backfield, maybe you fell asleep when Marcus Jones was covering Tee Higgins?

Generally I agree that the DBs have a ton of talent. But with Mills moving to safety, the little size they had at corner evaporated. Jon back to the slot, Jack as the fire, Gonzalez as ice.

Oh, Marcus will see the field plenty against the Dolphins, for example. Less so against the Bills. They now have 4 legit CBs who match up with totally different types of WRs.
