Saw Schickele At Umass, At Symphony Hall Boston, at NYU and I think 1 other place.
The act evolved. It was always fresh and always hilarious and always satisfyingly musical and very informative.
A hoot.
Cheers

I got more out of his radio show "Schickele Mix" than probably anywhere else regarding classical music edumacation.

I always think of Beethoven's 5th when I think classical

and of course

Tchaikovsky's Symphony No 6 (Pathetique) is my all-time favorite.

Here's a really nice recording, but you may want to skip the three minute introduction by the BBC commentator.

This is all four parts: Dawn, Storm, Ranz des Vaches, and Finale.

Chances are you've heard the last three parts multiple times in your life.

What you may not be familiar with is the first part: Dawn. A cello-focused piece, it's slow and melodic. When I was younger I would skip over it, but now I really enjoy it.

And by the end of this piece, the conductor and most of the performers are breathing hard and sweating. And that's cool, too.

Both my sons play trumpet, so when they were learning we listened to a lot of trumpet music. Jazz, rock, classical - didn't matter, we listened to lots and lots of trumpet music (especially Kind Of Blue by Miles Davis).

Slowing it down some ... two brilliant pieces that feature my favourite instrument, the cello.

Yo Yo Ma is brilliant, as usual.

There's always room for Cello.

I like Puccini and love Callas.

These Aria's are from Turandot. A bit of the Signor ascolta, ascolta signor was played in one of the Inspector Morse Episodes. Morse was of course a big opera buff.

Signor Ascolta, Ascolta Signor
