The Cover Is Better Than The Original Version

Since I was beaten to Hurt I'll go with

Song: Bullet The Blue Sky - U2
Cover: Sepultura

Hard for me to say which one is better - more study required. I will call in my friend Sam Adams to assist.

Granted they are both great. Drink up.

There are certain songs that are covered many times, and done well, due to the nature of the song itself.

I collect covers of: "Season of the Witch", "Spoonfull", and "Baby Please Don''t Go". But my favorite is:

Just about any cover of "As the Years go Passing by"

Eric Burton & the Animals
Boz Skaggs
Jeff Healy Band
Otis Rush
David Bromberg
Debbie Davis
Elvin Bishop
George Thorogood
Al Kooper
Santana
Gary Moore

Eric Burton''s is the best. I''m always looking for more.

When I started the thread, I thought that people would be all over Eric Clapton's covers of the JJ Cale songs "Cocaine" and "After Midnight."

As Bob R pointed out, some songs just get covered a lot; there are many from Cale's oeuvre that are like that.

Every Day I have to Cry Some

Original: Steve Alaimo.

Best Version: Ike and Tina Turner - underrated song from River Deep Mountain High.

Redemtion Song

Orignal: Bob Marley and the Wailers.

Best version: Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros (Yes - I think that a soon to be dead old white punk recorded the definitive version).

I put a spell on you.

Fever Tree
CCR
Bette Midler
Screaming Jay Hawkings
Nina Simone
Sonique

Good Stuff!

I tend to think of it as artists who wrote songs that were just not meant to be theirs. Blinded By The Light is a good example. Another is Shameless by Billy Joel. That song was just meant to be country, and Garth Brooks proved it.

I'd say a fun spin would be looking for songs that one artist created but became a huge hit for another (both the above fit that category)

Since PF09 stole my thunder, I'll stick with the Bob Dylan theme and Go with Rage against the Machine covering Maggies Farm.

Rufus Thomas' "Walking the Dog" was covered successfully by both the Stones & Aerosmith. It was a hit for all three although Aerosmith's version is probably the most well recognized.

Led Zep had great success covering Joan Baez's "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You."

Did they ever!

I like The Band's original version of "The Weight" but Aretha (and Duane Allman) really hit it out of the park on her cover which was a big hit for her.
