Many do not know that "I Will Always Love You" was written and originally performed by Dolly Parton. She wrote it as a good-bye to her mentor, Porter Wagoner, when she was leaving his variety show.
Years later when the producers of The Bodyguard were looking for a signature song, they chose Dolly's.
Obviously, the song is forever associated with Whitney Houston and is one of the all-time great performances.
Dolly has said that the first time she heard Whitney's version, she was driving in her car and it cam on the radio. She was so overcome with emotion that she had to pull off the road and compose herself.
She was once asked if she had any resentment, and to paraphrase her response, "Honey, if I every feel that way, I look at my bank account and know that much of what is in there is because of her performance."
