My daughter asked me this question the other day and I still haven't found the right answer. So just out of curiosity, what do you consider to be that 1 song that rises above all others?

The Star Spangled Banner.

I'm partial to the Hendrix version, but the traditional arrangement is also acceptable.

To be fair that's just a tribute to the best song ever.

To be ever fairer (pretty sure thats not a word), it's a black f*cking rectangle.

I hate not being able to see videos here anymore. :sulk:

Silly to think one knows, but all through my youth I was conviced it was Sounds of Silence.
Still love it, but so many I love and each is it's own and each is in ways, incomparable. My answer to your boy might be "Whatever you think it is. It's your choice."

Cheers

Hallelujah is a great song

but I can't pick one

What's going on by Marvin Gaye

or for what its worth by Stephen Stills

With or without you ~ U2

try chrome not IE

I think I'll have to go with "Mmm Bop" by Hanson.

Either that or "Watermelon in Easter Hay" by FZ.

Beethoven's 9th Symphony. I have probably listened to it thousands of times and it never fails to take me to a better place, no matter my mood or stress level. Only song that I can say that of so it gets my vote.

Contemporary ..... changes (daily?) but Yes' Awaken is probably it.

I'm an avid hard rock/metal guy but I have to admit, Marvin Gay has a few that I would consider right at the top.

The Star Spangled Banner is also very close to the top, especially when performed by one of the military services bands. Goose bumps abound not doubt.

I don't think I can answer. Depends on mood, context and a million other factors.

The 1812 Overture is brilliant.

Appalachian Spring Suite is like the soundtrack to America.

The Sounds of Silence approaches pop song perfection

Us and Them is both beautiful and disturbing.

I could probably go on with this all day

Stairway to Heaven.

And "The Star Bangled Banner"?? Really? It's a damn pub song! Jeez.

Layla, Satisfaction, Superstitious, Let's stay together, Ramblin' Gamblin' Man, Rock and Roll all night, Sleepwalk, Anything by Dean Martin, Eye of the Tiger. It's all mood related.

Desparado - Eagles

Yesterday - Beatles

Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd

Behind Blue Eyes - The Who

OK, there are too many. Like someone said, depends on the mood of the day/moment

America the Beautiful is the best patriotic song. I like it better then the Star Spangled Banner and the gingo song God Bless America. God loves the world not just the the USA. I even like the Canadian national anthem better then ours.(Much as I despise the Habs, lol) And how about Woody Guthries, This land is your land. That might be the best. As far as greatest rock song??????? Damn, I'll say Layla followed by Like a Rolling Stone. Since I was a kid never knew why we have the national anthem at sporting events. It's just a game not a patriotic event. I believe the National Anthem should be played at holidays or military events or presidential visits etc...

I'd never pretend to know which is the 'greatest' but I know what I enjoy.

Hallelujah is beautiful

Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" has always been a fav along with "Sounds of Silence". Love the entire album.

I'm not a Dylan fan per se but his "Like a Rolling Stone" changed pop music culture forever. His original recording had no sheet music at all; it was completely improvised and became the icon of those troubling times.

"What's Going On" by Marvin Gaye. That song enhanced his silky flowing tones like no other.

Britten's "War Requiem" for classical is moving the way it confronts the horrors of WWII.

Beethoven's 5th, of course but also his Emperor Piano Concerto No. 5 & my fav "Moonlight Sonata" which is hauntingly mesmerizing.

(Moonlight Sonata inspired John Lennon to write "Because".)

Ravel's Sheherazade is another fav.
