How's this:

Concept and overall ambition: A+
Writing: B
Overall execution, plot, etc.: B+ (I didn't see nearly the holes that many did, thought most questions were answered at least within the framework of the LOST universe)
Connecting with audience: A
Overall show rating: Much better than the vast majority of TV out there. A-.

I'd agree with the most of that. I think I'd probably give it a C for writing.

As I said, I think Cuse and Lindeloff really dragged down the writing grade for me. They aren't writers. They are producers who decided to write. One example - the dialogue they wrote was a little too on-the-nose for me - and there wasn't much distinction between characters manners of speaking (if you take the actors out of the equation). You could probably do a LOST drinking game to the number of times a character either repeats part of what was just said to him, and/or the number of times a character emphatically and unnecessarily states the name of the character he is speaking to, (ie...JACK: What do you want, John? JOHN: I'll tell you what I want, Jack" that kind of thing).

That said, it's still one of my top 5 all time favorite shows. Conceptually, everything is great. Even the final purgatory twist - it is a really great idea. The execution is flawed, in my opinion, and it does bother me - but within a vacuum, the idea is a moving one.

So, a friend of mine works in TV, and he claims he knows how the show ends. I won't say what he works on, or who he got it from (someone on the show), or what it is (I haven't asked).

Mostly, I'm just waiting to see how badly they duped him!

So, my friend did tell me before the finale aired.

It was the hot redhead who told him how the show would end.

<img src="http://www.lost.com/images/mader2.jpg">

She told him "fade to black, then the credits roll. Then, LOST comes on the screen and whooooooosh. The end."

Har, har, har. :nutpunch:

Had this show decided to call it quits after season 3 or 4, and wrapped things up a bit earlier, I bet it would've come together a lot more coherently, smoothly - and been done much better.

This though, is less the fault of the creators and more the fault of the network. They had what probably amounted to 3 seasons of solid material (possibly 4 - 4 1/2, but not 6), but ABC had a big money maker and wanted to milk it for every dime. If you recall, at the end of season 4 the producers finally had to force ABC into a termination date so they could move towards that end. Problem is by that time they had already been forced into some filler side-plots that I'm sure were never in the original framework.

I hear people say this all the time, but you know what? Make stuff up then. If you created new parts to the story, at least tie off the loose ends. Or, how about tying up loose ends that you introduced in season 1. What about Walt? It wouldnt have taken away from the story whatsoever if somewhere is season 6 they gave Walt a part in the show. Why make a point of him being "special" and "appearing in places he shouldnt be" if you are just basically going to ignore him?

I wasnt looking for detailed answers from the show - but I also was hoping they wouldnt completely ignore relativley important parts either. The finale on its own was excellent. Season 6 as a whole though was not very good.

So, are people happy with the way the show ended?

I finally watched it last night

After reading the insider info stuff on the previous page, yes. Before that, no. Except for finally seeing Kate and Jack kiss made me happy. I went to bed pretending I was her. :lipsmack:

I was a Jack fan during the show. You know when people were all picking people to root for (some loved Locke, Sawyer, Sayid etc.). I know--shocker--I rooted for the eventual ultimate protagonist.

I was always like, "If I were ever plane-wrecked on a mysterious island with mystery, intrigue and douchey natives, I think I'd do the same."

Live together, die alone muthafruckers.

I would not offer to watch my own appendix removal though. I have to draw the line somewhere. :coffee:

I can't tell you how many times I've heard, "I hate Jack." Yah. Right. Cause on an island where I'm stranded, I'm not listening to everything the ****ing M.D. says. And all he ever wanted was to save everyone else and his last sight was the plane in flight, leaving. Poetic.

In other words, yeah, I liked how the show ended.

Also, Jack and his father's conversation was creating a little dust in my room. I'll admit it.

Also, pwning one's own surgery is hawt. ROFL

**** that. I'd be like, knock me out cause I don't want to feel a thing and where the **** is my lollipop, doc!?!?!???

If you can't handle it, surely that's the best idea. Talk about fight or flight! I'd kinda like to see what was happening, and that's without being a surgeon. I'm kind of a control freak. But eff yeah if I knew how to do the shit I would.

And lots of people bitched about Kate. FFS, she'd be my homegirl if I was on the island. That's one bad assed bitch.

Oh, I can be a control freak too but when it comes to day surgery, I think I'll let someone else do it while I catch some ZZZzzzzzzzz's.

Lots of badassery and troubled for sure. I don't know, man. She toyed with my boy the entire time. I'd be all, "Dude, she's playing you. She just went down to the swimming hole with Sawyer. Just sayin'." :archive:

No way.

I'm pretty sure it was a "dood, we are on an island WTF we can't be thinking about a future n' shit" :coffee:

Also, if I thought I was going to die and Sawyer was there being all noble n' shit, rest assured- Jh be hittin' that, too. It just wouldn't count as a notch on the belt, if you ask me ;) ROFL Different scenerio :coffee:

I got chills at the I love you's wuv

I was happy with it

I've had to catch up in the past couple of days on hulu, so I just read the last about 40 pages of this thread. I took notes, referenced what was bothering me and also mention by others <---- is dork.

But after the stuff Flagg and bish posted, I feel okay. I like how the side stuff was "purgatory", not the island. The one thing that bothered me the most was why did Desmond flip switches? But it was the constant Penny, duh. That made me feel a whole lot better. Because I was gonna go the **** off about polar bears.

Finally got to see it last night, I was out of town for work.

I think most people have summed up the details of "what" happened.

The LAX timeline was "purgatory" of "limbo". They intentionally made it non-denominational with the stained glass window behind Jack at the church where he and his father spoke. You could see a Islamic crescent, a christian cross, a buddhist mandala, etc.

I think the use of the "light" at the church is meant to invoke the idea of the souls of the dead "going into the light". That motif has been used in countless other movies and is a common item reported in Near Death Experiences. So clearly they were moving on from purgatory/limbo to what ever the next stage was

Of course, this raises the question does this also say anything about the light on the island?

I think the show clearly established that the primary focus of all the characters was the conflict between good and evil. It was externalized in Jacob vs. MIB but each character faced their own inner demons and had to make choices in this regard.

It also clearly established that the light was somehow a focal point for this struggle. I'm willing to allow the writers to claim that the 'light", "power", "specialness" or what ever other term one wants to toss out about the island is their MacGuffin. Actually, as I read the Wiki entry to explain the term, I see that this answer has already been added as an example.

I don't have an issue with this, every work of fiction is entitled to one MacGuffin, and since the essence of this story is how the characters respond to each other in their attempt to deal with the MacGuffin, it doesn't really matter what it is.

It's your opinion, of course. I would argue that there's never been a show that even comes close to rivaling LOST's creativity and complexity, nor do I think such a show will occur for a very long time.

I would argue that Babylon 5 is one you could put in the same category, with one caveat.

One has to understand that the original plan was to have B5 run for 5 seasons. It was an independent production and not affiliated with any network.

Late in the 3rd and during the filming of the 4th season it didn't look like they would be picked up by any distributor for season 5, so Straczynski compressed season 4 and 5 into one to address the main plot points he wanted to.

It was only during the middle of Season 4 that TNT agreed to pick up season 5 so he had to change gears. As such season 5 was a little disjointed and didn't flow as well as the original 4 seasons.

So if one looks at the first four seasons, and a limited number of season 5 episodes, then I still think that is one of the best pieces of cinematic fiction ever done. That would include TV shows, movies, etc.
