The Patriots' 2024 Off Season Thread

Dont'a Hightower Hired as Patriots' LB Coach by Jerod Mayo; Played 9 Years with Team

Dont'a
That's a really good move. He's a Patriots legend and he is a very smart guy. it may take him time to develop.

A fantastic testament to BB that two players he brought in, two stalwarts on D, are now HC and the new LB coach.

He spent a boat load in 2020. I think he will do the same.

There's a big difference in cash spending and simply signing FAs to big money deals. I assume you know that.
In case you don't:
The signing bonus and sometimes the guaranteed money require cash up front upon signing. That money comes out of Kraft's pocket and Kraft doesn't like parting with his money.
A simple 3 year $30M contract can be paid out of earnings over 3 years, kind of like a car payment.
A 3 year $30M contract with a $15M signing bonus requires half the money to be paid up front.
See the difference?

I know the difference. In 2020 he spent the most he ever has in real cash spending. I expect he will do similar this off-season in order to improve the team as fast as he can.

And it was still only good for 5th in the league, and were right back down in the low 20s the following season.

You can’t spend like that every season. That is why I expect Kraft to open things up again this year.

Winning 6 Superbowls, 9 AFC Championships, and 17 Division Titles for what was the worst and poorest of the NFL teams will earn you the money that not even Kraft could deny him.
Yes it was all Belichick, he had zero help from any other coach, player nor front office personnel.

1 season out of 10 is hardly "every season".

So it's ok with you to blame Belichick for any and all problems but it's not ok to give him credit when it's due for the teams' successes?
Btw, you do know that Belichick hired the coaches and paid them out of his own coach's salary from Kraft, don't you?

Facts are facts, look at the record.
Without certain people it's a losing record.

Brady afforded Kraft and Bill to be able to build the team a certain way. Bill's philosophy as you know was to build a mid-tier football team with him coaching up the defense and Brady coaching up the offense. It had tremendous success so it is hard to argue against the approach.

Given where we are now with trying to find a QB, I am of the belief that things will change and you will see a different approach. I don't think we will ever be in the top 10 of real cash spending but I also do not see that as a prerequisite to good team building. IMO, Bill's team building was atrocious going back to 2017 both in the draft and FA. That is the reason the roster deteriorated around Brady and subsequently deteriorated even more after Brady left; ultimately leading to Bill being fired and his current unemployment. He royally crapped the bed the last two seasons. So, as I have said, I think this offseason will see a bit of a spending spree, probably not to the same level of 2020 but in the ball park. The bigger piece for me is the draft. Given the awesome draft position we have, we can fill a lot of holes with some young studs.

Bill Belichick in 11+ seasons of coaching without Tom Brady:
84-102 Record

8 losing seasons
2023 season, 4-13 - most losses since 2000
0 Superbowls
0 conference titles
0 division titles
1 playoff win

"Bill Belichick has coached 11 seasons without Tom Brady. 8 of those have been losing seasons." - Colin Cowherd
Fyp so the old Blind and senile such as I can see more clearly what a miserable failure our former coach was.

This makes me sooo happy!
I posted this on another thread. It’s more propaganda BS from the Kraft shills. The implied dig at BB is that he somehow didn’t value athleticism and explosiveness.

The fans aren’t buying this. They see exactly what the Krafts are doing and they’re pretty disgusted with it. The Krafts are losing this PR battle.

It’s not propaganda at all. Bill said many times that he wanted to acquire players that he felt comfortable coaching. He also talked about getting guys that were high character, all around football players. He was never the type of GM that went for pure athleticism and skill which is why so many of his draft picks IMO were infuriating and head scratching.

You'd almost swear that Bill never drafted Gronk, Jules, White, Hightower, Collins, Wilfork, Mankins, Thuney, Gonzo etc etc

Go back and read the first and second round picks from 07 till now.

The hits are Gronk, McCourty, Hightower, Jones, Dugger, and some people would argue Sony. Solder was a starter in the league for awhile. The jury is still out on the last two drafts.
Anyone who posts in this forum on a semi regular basis would have hit on more and better players in that time span.

I do wonder if they are implementing for this draft, or if it will cover new prospects grades. 10ish weeks isn't a long time to revamp a system that has been in place for 20+ years.
