DENVER (AP) - One Colorado woman's love for tofu has been judged X-rated by state officials. Kelly Coffman-Lee wanted to tell the world about her fondness for bean curd by picking certain letters for her SUV's license plate. Her suggestion for the plate: "ILVTOFU." But the Division of Motor Vehicles blocked her plan because they thought the combination of letters could be interpreted as profane.

Says Department of Revenue spokesman Mark Couch: "We don't allow 'FU' because some people could read that as street language for sex."

Officials meet periodically to ensure state plates stay free of letters that abbreviate gang slang, drug terms or obscene phrases.

The 38-year-old Coffman-Lee says tofu is a staple of her family's diet because they are vegan and that the DMV misinterpreted her message.

Hrm here when you chose a vanity plate you have to explain it briefly..but the other drivers aren't going to know that doesn't mean TO FU*&.:)

I dunno, "I love to F you" would be kind of an affirming message to everyone around her, I'd think...

Do people really LOVE tofu?
Isnt that one of those foodstuffs thats just tolerated?

I mean, does a tofu eater get all anxious and start salivating at the thought of their tofu the same way a meat eater would get excited about this?

My wife really likes tofu. It isn't anywhere near as good as beef, pork, or chicken, but it isn't as terrible as I thought. It does have a weird texture, though.

I think I can answer this.

No.

Tofu is the food equivalent of a phallus for a woman on a deserted island.

It's close enough to the real thing, when it's been so long that you don't know any better.

The tofu sold in this country is fairly bland. I've been to a tofu restaurant in Japan and there were numerous flavors from spicy to sweet and consistencies that varied as well.

Not saying I want it every day but if prepared right it can be pretty good.

I can't stomach tofu and it isn't all that good for you but this dead horse has been beaten here before.:)

When it comes in it's "au naturale" form, like the pale rubbery squares that you find in Asian Hot & Sour Soup, tofu has no taste. However, when prepared better, it's a versatile "base". Even in America, where we don't really know how to work with it as well as in Europe and Asia, we still manage to make pretty decent fake hot dogs, burgers, and breakfast meats with it. It's all about getting the texture and the "surrounding" flavoring right (e.g. for fake bacon, getting it smoky-tasting). Tofu is basically the Asian version of other ethnic "cheap-ass food bases" (e.g. polenta, rice, cous-cous, pasta, potatoes, bread, etc.,.).

Back in the late 80s I went to a restaurant in Chinatown that was vegetarian, but you wouldn't know it. The menu had "pork", "beef", and "chicken" categories, but it was all done with tofu. Don't know the name of it, or if it's still there...

We have one of those here too but I can ALWAYS smell it. Even that tofutti ice cream just has that bean smell.:)

Tofu, soy, steak, ice cream, booze... if you don't eat too much of it, it's probably not going to kill you. JMO.

Oh yeah for sure.:) Didn't mean that..but it isn't this super health food some think it is either.

Yes. you're absolutely correct.

I'm sure, after awhile, that boisterous proclamations could be made, tending towards the greater good. And those proclamations will most likely be heartfelt. As well they should be. Because the world is lovely and some of us are doing our damndest to make it better. Despite bullshit, et al. And we understand we seem silly in perspective. But, yeah, tofu is never an 'oh, man, I can't wait for some tofu". Tofu is either a) indulgent pretentiousness, or b) genuine protein for folks that can't afford meat. C) it's is very rare that tofu is de facto right up anyone's alley.

imo, they are fake one way or another. If they're defensive about it, they mean it and wish they could rely on it for food. Their intentions are noble, but their executive is selfish. If they're not defensive about it, they're probale offensive about it. They hate it and wish they invented it. They'll give you dirty looks, especially if you're exciting about the possibilities.
