Giants key stats

Over the weekend, the Giants become the first team in the NFL officially eliminated from playoff contention. Dropping to 2-10 because of an overtime loss to the Detroit Lions, it is easy to dismiss them as one of the worst teams in football, but as a look at their numbers shows, the situation is more complex than that — even though that did not prevent them from firing head coach Brian Daboll earlier this month.

Record: 2-10 (4th NFC West)
Scoring differential: -70 (27th)
Turnover differential: -6 (t-26th)
Offense: 22.0 points/game (22nd), 348.5 yards/game (11th), 13 giveaways (t-13th), 0.051 EPA/play (12th), 0.122 EPA/dropback (12th), -0.053 EPA/run (18th)
Defense: 27.8 points/game (30th), 385.0 yards/game (30th), 7 takeaways (30th), 0.149 EPA/play (31st), 0.124 EPA/dropback (23rd), 0.193 EPA/run (32nd)

The Giants’ season so far is a tale of two units. The offense, despite starting three different quarterbacks and missing their No. 1 running back and wide receiver, has performed at a surprisingly solid level so far: while New York is still only ranked 22nd in points per game, the group is above average in multiple categories — not exactly what you would expect from a two-win team 12 seasons in.

The defense, however, is a different story (which led to coordinator Shane Bowen recently following Daboll on the chopping block). The unit has been abysmal against the run so far, ranking worst in the NFL in yards, yards per attempt, and EPA per carry. The pass defense has performed slightly better, but still not at a level that would allow New York to take advantage of an at-times good offense.

The biggest question for the Giants heading into Week 13 is who their starting quarterback will be, first-round draft pick Jaxson Dart or veteran backup Jameis Winston. Under normal circumstances, Dart would be their guy, but he has missed back-to-back games after sustaining a concussion; Winston, an offseason free agency pickup who started the season as QB3, has performed decently in his two starts.

If Dart returns to the lineup, as is expected, the Patriots would go up against a quarterback who has shown promise since overtaking veteran Russell Wilson on the depth chart. In his seven starts, Dart completed 128 of 204 pass attempts (62.7%) for 1,417 yards with 10 touchdowns and three interceptions, positing an EPA of 0.183 per dropback good enough for ninth in the NFL over that particular span.

Whoever is starting on Monday, however, will have to operate without the Giants’ top two weapons. Running back Cam Skattebo and wide receiver Malik Nabers are both out for the season due to injury. Replacing them in the lineup are Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Wan’Dale Robinson, respectively: a versatile back, Tracy Jr. has touched the ball 124 times for 604 yards and a touchdown this season; Robinson has been on the receiving end of 66 passes that he took for 794 yards and three scores.

Giants' run defense vs. Pats RB TreVeyon Henderson

The Giants are last in the NFL against the run and have issues with running backs receiving the ball as well. They are allowing 157.7 yards per game on the ground and are 31st in the red zone. Last week in Detroit, they gave up 237 yards on the ground, including two touchdown runs of 39 and 69 yards to Jahmyr Gibbs.

Giants TE Theo Johnson vs. Patriots' safeties

The Giants have wanted to lean on Theo Johnson more than they have thus far. He's been excellent at times, showing signs of breaking out, but then recedes with a bad drop or a missed opportunity. He has over 75 yards receiving in two of his last three.

Which safety the Pats will counter with is the question. Will it be Jaylinn Hawkins or Craig Woodson, or a combination of both? Hawkins is ranked fifth out of 94 NFL safeties this year by Pro Football Focus.

=====================

We should also keep an eye on Dexter Lawrence's status . Reports I've read say Lawrence re-injured the elbow that ended his season prematurely last year in last week's game.

In recent games, the Giants have been hurt by 4th quarter defensive collapses.

Go Pats!

Is Dart going to play or Winston?

Dexter Lawrence DNP Thursday with neck/elbow. Interesting.

Moses DNP with illness.

Judging by the Giants tough play against the Lions last week, taking them to OT before losing, this could be a tougher game for the Pats than the Giants record suggests.

The recent coaching changes at HC, OC and DC seem to have reinvigorated their players.

Giants Defense Set to Rally Around New Defensive Coordinator Charlie Bullen
I said that elsewhere, they seem to be much more competitive, especially on offense. mccoy was one of those unlucky people who coached the chargers, who seemed to be cursed no matter who their head coach is as far as injuries go for sure.

Wan’Dale Robinson is an absolute pain in the ass. He often receives double-digit targets. Looks like is is nursing a minor ankle injury but the Pats need a plan for both him and TE Theo Johnson. I expect a competitive game.

Yes.
This Giants team despite the defensive stats has a good defensive line, and WILL cause trouble. If they don’t get home though they are vulnerable to deep shots.
The RBs will have to get to the second level. I think if they can they will have success but I think we see a day where Henderson either is ripping 40 yard chunks or getting stuffed at the line.
Their offense is tougher than the numbers would indicate. They have some talent on their Oline, and a lot of guys willing to give up their bodies to play hard football.

For all of being the first team eliminated from the playoffs, and with all due respect to Bill Parcells, the Giants seem a lot tougher than their record indicates. They lost several one-score or closer games, beat the Eagles rather convincingly and lost to the Broncos by one point. Not that I think they'll beat us, but this games easily fits under the Any Given Sunday umbrella.

Yeah honestly it's a great test; it's the most rested the Pats have been all year and win or lose they're stewing in the feeling for the next 2 weeks. And the opponent is easy to look past. We'll see how well prepared they are going into the game and how well they exploit the weaknesses of the opponent. The Giants have the worst run defense in all of football. The Pats should be able to run all over them and comfortably win that way without it really mattering how things go in the air. If they can't, and / or are not prepared, frankly that would not be a great sign for their chances in the playoffs. So here's hoping they show up and take care of business. It doesn't need to be a pretty win, as long as it's a win.

The Giants have much better personnel than their record suggests. This MNF game will be closer than the 7 point spread, imo. Unless the coaches self-scout to correct for what teams are doing differently against us now than 5-6 weeks ago, I think this will be a 2-3 point game either way.

Lazar stated that this defense uses the sideline as an extra defender as compared to past defenses.
Cincinnati's running game went right around Chaisson. I am guessing Chaisson is on the field instead of A Jennings is to force the RB to the sideline because of his speed.

Maybe they change their style or wait for the injured to come back before they make any changes.

Per PatsPulpit:

"The New England Patriots will go without additional two against the New York Giants.

Starting left guard Jared Wilson and special teams captain Brenden Schooler have been ruled out for Monday night, head coach Mike Vrabel announced during his weekend press conference.

Here’s the rest of the game statuses leading up to the 8:15 p.m. ET kickoff at Gillette Stadium.

OUT

Patriots
G Jared Wilson (ankle)
S Brenden Schooler (ankle)

Giants
LB Kayvon Thibodeaux (shoulder)

Ankle injuries quickly hit the Patriots last Sunday at Paycor Stadium. Wilson, an 11-game rookie starter along the offensive line, exited on the opening drive. Schooler, a reigning All-Pro standing with a team-high 77.2 percent of the snaps in the kicking game, then exited before halftime. Both were ruled out on the way to what became a 26-20 win. Both have since been non-participants for three consecutive practices in Foxborough. Earlier in primetime preparations, New England sent left tackle and No. 4 overall pick Will Campbell to injured reserve along with cornerback Alex Austin.

On the other side of the aisle, the Giants will be without Thibodeaux’s pass rush for a third game in a row due to a shoulder injury.

QUESTIONABLE

Patriots
DT Khyiris Tonga (chest)
LB Harold Landry III (knee)

Giants
LB Victor Dimukeje (knee)
LB Swayze Bozeman (hip)
LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (neck, knee)
CB Korie Black (biceps)

Saturday’s in-stadium practice saw a pair of March signings return for the Patriots in a partial capacity. Questionable tags followed. Landry had been listed as sidelined on back-to-back injury reports due to a knee issue. The captain off the edge leads New England with 16 quarterback hits and is tied for the lead 6.5 sacks through a dozen starts. As for Tonga, the nose tackle, short-yardage fullback and offseason award winner suffered a chest injury last week. A season-low 12 defensive snaps were the result. He has since been a limited participant as well as a non-participant for an interior defensive line that lost standout Milton Williams to IR midway through November.

But tight end Hunter Henry, right tackle Morgan Moses as well as linebackers K’Lavon Chaisson and Jahlani Tavai are among those set to go without game designations."

2. Weakness vs. weakness: The Giants rank last in the NFL in rush defense, giving up 157.2 yards per game, but can the Patriots capitalize?

That's one of the subplots of Monday's game, especially with New England playing without starting left tackle Will Campbell (knee/IR) and starting left guard Jared Wilson (ankle). The Patriots average 3.9 yards per rush (27thh in the NFL) and 112 rushing yards per game (19th). Getting rushers started has been a challenge as the Patriots gain 2.0 yards before contact per rush (28th).

What's the weather supposed to be for tomorrow night?

The Giants have already been eliminated from the playoffs.
Interesting to me that the NFL would schedule Pats-Giants on MNF.
It will be Maye's first time on national TV, not counting TNF on Amazon Prime.
Let's hope he has a good game for the nation to see.
