Pats | Welker judges Samuel
Mon, 30 Jun 2008 10:07:55 -0700

The Associated Press reports New England Pats WR Wes Welker said he is disappointed that the team was unable to re-sign Philadelphia Eagles CB Asante Samuel. "Asante's a great player, so it hurts not to have a guy like that. But then again, it's part of the business of the game," Welker said. "He chose money over championships, and that's the way it goes sometimes."

How many championships does Wes have?

I'm going to have to say Asante has a better chance since he's in the NFC.

Didn't you see who the STEELERS drafted this year?

He's just speaking the truth, what everyone else is saying and thinking. Not saying it's wise to do in such a public matter, but nonetheless.

I'm going to say that Vegas thinks you are way wrong.

Pats are 17:5 and Eagles are 20:1.

Vegas knows what conference the Pats and Eagles are in.

As between you and Vegas, I'm going with Vegas

The Steelers rank after NE, Indy, Jax and SD in the AFC. That's what Vegas says, and that's what I would say if Vegas didn't exist.

Well...it was a pretty arrogant thing to say.

How many championships is he guaranteeing during Asante's tenure with the Eagles.

Personally, I would have said something like, "well Asante was a great player and I am sad to see him go, but maybe now we can find a DB that can catch."

Not really sure what that point has to do with anything. Is the implication that, because A$$ante has the bling on the finger, he's somehow "smarter" than Welker? I don't see any problem with Welker's comments. He was dead on. (Although some of us now debate whether A$$ante is a great player, LOL.) Samuel DID choose money. He's clearly got a much lessened shot with the Eagles than he did with New England. Hey, there's no harm in doing it for the money, as long as you admit you're doing it for the money. :coffee:

Maybe he thinks Asante is a dick. Maybe he wishes that Asante did what many of the other guys on the Pats have done in order to stay with the team -- leave money on the table. Look at Brady, Moss, Bruschi, Vrabel and others. Maybe Welker is disappointed that a really good player left, and can't help taking a little shot at his "economics first" choice.

Maybe a lot of things other than pure arrogance.

If you see or read an interview with Welker, he comes across as earnest and straightforward.

At least, that's what I think.

Point is...

IMO...Arrogance had a role in a disappointing end to his season last year, but it doesn't appear he's eaten any of that humble pie yet.

Even though that comment was total snark, I'll answer it straight up.

No amount of odds guaranty a win. But that doesn't change the fact that when you go to a team that is worse because they are going to pay you more, you've made a choice that says money is more important to me than being with a team that maximizes my chances of getting a ring.

That's what Assante did, and that's what Welker said he did.

what? that sounds more like throwing him under the bus than what he actually said

This is NOT him "throwing him under the bus", it is a compliment to Asante. Throwing someone under the bus is blaming someone else on the team for losing ala Manning and his Oline.

THere is NOTHING wrong with the statement at all it actually looks like a scripted statement that any team player would say while being honest about the business side of the NFL.

Like JD said having a ring or not has as no relevance to this statement either. Stop digging for a "story" where there is none.

Welker was GREAT in the SB and while arrogance or overconfidence may have indeed played a role in the result, Welker didn't show any of that failing on Feb 3.

Either way, you're mistaking candor for arrogance.

I would love to see Welker in Black and Gold...You guys have a great receiver there for years to come.

I just find it odd that he decided to be the team spokesman on loyalty and championships.

That's what I was thinking.

Also, maybe on his way out of the locker room for the last time he told everyone "suck it bishes, I'm gonna go get paid!" And does he have mouths to feed? Did anyone even think of that?!

Why not? He's one of the best players on the team. You don't have to actually have a ring to believe that the best course of action is to forego money in the name of putting yourself in the best position to get one.

But that said, I see your point. Brady or Bruschi would have more gravitas on the champion issue. I just don't see Welker as an inappropriate spokesman since we're talking about the next ring, not the ones in the past.
