He hurt it making a tackle and you could see him run off with his arm kind of dangling. The med staff checked him out fairly quickly and he remained in the game next drive and at least for a bit I didn't pay quite as much attention once it got out of hand.

Bill's mercy rule was to stop trying FGs as he felt that would be needlessly running it up. But he also felt it was insulting to stop trying altogether. And his way it did make sense even if the score board still kept heating up.

The medical staff makes the decision, not the player. It's not like he's calling in sick with a cold.
He's at the facility working with the trainers and medical people. They run tests, xrays, MRI's and make the call.
