With the resurgence of the Celts and Bruins, and Patriots Day and the Marathon looming, I am getting a little nostalgic of how lucky we are to be fans of the New England teams. I guess first I'd have to define what we're talking about here.

i·con –noun
1. a picture, image, or other representation.
2. a representation of some sacred personage.
3. a sign or representation that stands for its object by virtue of a resemblance or analogy to it.
4. An important and enduring symbol.

So, if we're talking sports, I'd think we're talking, "an important and enduring symbol who, as a representation, stands for the team". The debate is around the word "sacred". I have a problem with that word, since none of us know what these people are really like. We can only go by their public personae, but for all we know they torture kittens and snort heroin in their off time. So I'll 'dumb down' "sacred" and simply say that, in addition to representing the team, they should have been large contributors, and ASSUMEDLY be of a fairly high moral fibre. So, for me, that would eliminate someone like Manny. (Sorry, Manny. You're kind of dopey and lazy a lot of the time.)

For me, my list would be:
Bobby Orr
Larry Bird
Tom Brady
Tedy Bruschi
Troy Brown

I'm not sure I'd include any Red Sox. Yaz was pretty much a d*ck, and so was Jim Rice. As far as winning us a WS, Schilling was huge, but he's also kind of a d*ck and he was basically a late-addition "hired gun". Papi's getting there, but not quite there yet.

OK I'm a little younger than most of you guys who have posted so I'm gonna stick with guys I've seen play. Oh an JD makes a great point but I'll still give ya five of each

:Redsox:
1) Papi
2) Yaz
3) Dewey
4) Pedro
5) Tek

:Celtics:
1) Bird
2) Parrish
3) Haviliceck
4) KG
5) Pierce

:Bruins:
1) Robert Gordon Orr
2) Neeley
3) Terry O'Reilly
4) Bourque
5) Rick "Nifty" Middleton

:patriots!:pat:
1) Brady
2) Troy Brown
3) Hannah
4) Grogan
5) Tedy Bruschi
