Massachusetts Man Dies From Eating Too Much Black Licorice

(AP) – A Massachusetts construction worker’s love of black licorice wound up costing him his life. Eating a bag and a half every day for a few weeks threw his nutrients out of whack and caused the 54-year-old man’s heart to stop, doctors reported Wednesday.

“Even a small amount of licorice you eat can increase your blood pressure a little bit,” said Dr. Neel Butala, a cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital who described the case in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The problem is glycyrrhizic acid, found in black licorice and in many other foods and dietary supplements containing licorice root extract. It can cause dangerously low potassium and imbalances in other minerals called electrolytes.

Eating as little as 2 ounces of black licorice a day for two weeks could cause a heart rhythm problem, especially for folks over 40, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns.

“It’s more than licorice sticks. It could be jelly beans, licorice teas, a lo t of things over the counter. Even some beers, like Belgian beers, have this compound in it,” as do some chewing tobaccos, said Dr. Robert Eckel, a University of Colorado cardiologist and former American Heart Association president. He had no role in the Massachusetts man’s care.

The death was clearly an extreme case. The man had switched from red, fruit-flavored twists to the black licorice version of the candy a few weeks before his death last year. He collapsed while having lunch at a fast-food restaurant. Doctors found he had dangerously low potassium, which led to heart rhythm and other problems. Emergency responders did CPR and he revived but died the next day.

The FDA permits up to 3.1% of a food’s content to have glycyrrhizic acid, but many candies and other licorice products don’t reveal how much of it is contained per ounce, Butala said. Doctors have reported the case to the FDA in hope of raising attention to the risk.

Jeff Beckman, a spokesman for the Hershey Company, which makes the popular Twizzlers licorice twists, said in an email that “all of our products are safe to eat and formulated in full compliance with FDA regulations,” and that all foods, including candy, “should be enjoyed in moderation.”

New Hampshire state police have announced arrests in the gruesome case of a man who they say ordered his wife to behead her lover after he shot the man in the head, killing him.

Jonathan Amerault, 25, of Keene, N.H., was killed Sept. 20. His body was found two days later at a remote campsite in Coos County, N.H., police said.

On Friday, Armando Barron, 30, of Jaffrey, N.H., was charged with killing Amerault and his wife, Britany Barron, 31, was charged with decapitating the victim and concealing the body, according to reports that cited a court affidavit in the case.

Barron and his wife pleaded not guilty Friday at a court arraignment in Cheshire County, it was reported. They were jailed without bail.

The affidavit says Britany told investigators her husband forced her to cut Amerault's wrists when he was alive and then to behead him after the murder, the Keene Sentinel reported.

The paper also reported that Britany's lawyer Richard Guerriero said at the arraignment that she only participated in the crime because she feared for her life.

“This really started with her being beaten severely,” Guerriero said, according to the paper. “If you look at her face right now ... she still has the bruising on her face and around her eyes and it’s described in the affidavit. Armando beat her severely and threatened her. He put a gun in her mouth, an obvious threat to kill her.”

Police said Amerault was murdered after Armando Barron lured him to a state park using his wife’s phone.

The affidavit says Britany told investigators her husband found out she was having an affair with Amerault, a co-worker, after going through her phone the day before, Patch Nashua reported. She said after confronting her about the affair, her husband beat her. Her mugshot shows her with swollen black eyes.

Investigators wrote in the affidavit that after the murder Barron ordered his wife to cut Amerault's head off so that dental records could not be used to identify him, according to the news outlet. A small gravel hole was dug and the head was placed in it and covered with gravel.

The discovery of Amerault’s remains at the campsite came after state conservation came across Britany Barron and told her that she was trespassing and needed to move on, Patch reported.

She told the officers, “I am in big trouble.”

The affidavit says the officers found Amerault’s torso and head wrapped in tarps.

Prosecutors said Britany was being charged, despite her cooperation, because she had many opportunities to report the crime before being found at the campsite, the Sentinel reported.

“She was cooperative after she got caught,” prosecutor Scott Chase said, according to the paper.

Toothbrush removed from man’s stomach after he swallows it while brushing
September 23, 2020 | 12:52pm

It was a real brush with death.

An Indian man’s teeth-cleaning routine went horribly awry after he accidentally swallowed the brush and had to have it surgically removed.

The unnamed Pasighat resident, 39, was reportedly brushing the back of his throat on September 15 when the toothbrush slipped and disappeared down his gullet, Metro reports.

Despite feeling no pain — and only minor, occasional discomfort in his stomach — the man reported to a nearby clinic, where doctors could not find the missing dental hygiene tool.

The patient was then referred to the Bakin Pertin General Hospital in Pradesh, where he received a throat scan the following day.

However, even X-rays couldn’t detect the toothbrush, which led surgeon Dr. Bomni Tayeng to deduce that it “had entered into the stomach.”

His suspicions were confirmed after he performed an exploratory laparotomy — where the belly is sliced open to aid diagnosis — and felt the instrument inside.

Although seemingly fairly innocuous, doctors determined that the man’s condition could become fatal if untreated. So they made a “small incision in his stomach” and extracted the bloodied toothbrush within 30 minutes, according to Dr. Tayeng.

Thankfully the man survived.

“The very next day he started taking oral fluids, and had an uneventful recovery” before getting discharged on September 21, Dr. Tayeng told SWNS.
