Most definitely take some time to play it in the store. Plug it in to several makes/models of tube amps. While there, also ask if they have any Faded Standards. They're Standards w/out the bells and whistles of the stock Standards. Less money, too.

I think the new Gibson LP Standards are in the $2300 range. Mine was $1500 in 2003. Loved the guitar, came to hate the neck. 60's slimline. I'll never own another one of those.
