Patriots re-sign Eric Alexander, Wesley Britt, Ryan Krug

Pretty good news. I like Alexander and am happy to see him stay. Thought he had a decent pre-season. Britt was very good in college and came to us with an injury. Would have been a pretty high draft pick otherwise. Glad to see that he and Krug will be adding some competition to the OL mix.

OK, what is the damn deal with Wesley Britt. He is a monster! Why did he get zero looks, yet we re-signed him? Pires told us that he basically plays cards or whatever with Mankins all day. Was he resigned to keep Mankins happy?

I want to see this monster play!

He had a broken leg when we signed him. Should be good to go by now, though.

OVERVIEW
Britt is a towering athlete with the size of a basketball player, but has the aggression of a defensive lineman. He is a consistent performer who plays with pain, but has battled leg injuries the last two years.

Britt was an all-state offensive tackle, Class 5A "Lineman of the Year" in Alabama and rated as one of the state's top-five prospects by College Sports' Southeastern Recruiting, adding SuperPrep All-America as a senior at Cullman High School. He was the No. 5 prospect on the Birmingham News "Super Senior" list. As a senior, he graded out at 85-percent and registered 38 pancake blocks. He was the No. 3 prospect in the southeast according to SuperPrep and also played defense where he turned in 97 tackles and 12 stops behind the line. As a junior, he threw the discus 142-foot-6 to win the state title.

Britt redshirted with the Crimson Tide in 2000, but moved into the starting lineup the following year, starting every game since arriving at Alabama (44). He posted 107 knockdowns in 2001, including 17 in the South Carolina clash. In 2002, he graded 96-percent or better for blocking consistency in 12 games while delivering a team-high 197 knockdowns.

He added 134 knockdowns in nine games as a junior in 2003 before missing the final four contests with a broken leg. He graduated with a degree in Marketing after the 2003 campaign, but the leg injury would continue to sideline him throughout 2003 spring drills. When the 2004 season began, he was back in the starting lineup at left tackle, registering 63 knockdowns through the team's first 11 games.

ANALYSIS
Positives: Has a very tall frame, with the ability to add at least another 30 pounds of bulk … Has lean muscle development and is light on his feet for a player of his size … Has adequate quickness to gain position and slide … Plays with good awareness and is quick to pick up line games and blitzes … Has the intelligence to pick up plays quickly and is an articulate, intelligent and vocal athlete … Uses his size properly to occupy space and gain position in order to wall off and sustain … Decent drive blocker who has the lateral mobility to gain position coming off the snap … Plays with a wide base and has made improvements in attempts to readjust and mirror vs. the edge rushers … Lacks the ability to sink his hips and stay at a low pad level, but uses his frame to lean-in and grab to push his man off the line and wall off … Decent second level blocker, taking good angles to make the second level cut-off block … When he keeps his leg base wide, he is quick in his kick slide.

Negatives: Has adequate initial quickness, but tends to take false steps and get behind the defender when coming off the snap … Lacks explosion and flexibility to roll his hips and drive defenders off the ball, relying on his size to wall off … While he is a four-year starter on the left side, he does not have the lower body strength or the foot quickness to prevent from being beaten off the edge … This could lead to him moving to the right side in the pros, where he will not have to be isolated vs. the quicker edge rushers … More of a waist bender, rather than a knee bender, causing him to struggle when defenders get outside his frame work … Shows good hand placement, but fails to generate a strong punch, despite his upper body power … When he gets high in his stance, he tends to cross his feet, resulting in him struggling to redirect vs. the edge rush … Needs to do a better job of reloading his hands (drops them and does not throw them), as he keeps them too low, allowing defenders to get into his chest to push him back … Has had durability issues with fractured leg bones the last two years that might warrant further medical evaluation … Needs to take better angles to cut off linebackers when working in the second level … Might not be suited to play guard, as he is a marginal trap blocker who fails to bring his feet and loses balance when on the move … Must work on eliminating the false steps he takes on his deep set.

INJURY REPORT
2003 -- Suffered a fractured left tibia and fibula in the Tennessee game, undergoing surgery on Oct. 26, and missed the rest of the season (Mississippi State, Louisiana State, Auburn, Hawaii).

2004 -- Did not participate in spring drills while undergoing rehabilitation of a broken left leg sustained in the Tennessee game in 2003 … Played the final two games of the season with a mid-foot sprain, which limited his snaps vs. Louisiana State and Auburn.

2005 -- Suffered a right fibula fracture during the week of practices at the Senior Bowl and would not be able to work out at the Combines or in campus pro day until April.

AGILITY
5.30 seconds in 40-yard dash … 24 bench reps at 225 pounds.

HIGH SCHOOL
Attended Cullman (Ala.) High School, playing football for coach Mark Britton … All-state offensive tackle, Class 5A "Lineman of the Year" in Alabama and rated as one of the state's top-five prospects by College Sports' Southeastern Recruiting, adding SuperPrep All-America as a senior … No. 5 prospect on the Birmingham News "Super Senior" list … As a senior, he graded out at 85-percent and registered 38 pancake blocks … Was the No. 3 prospect in the southeast according to SuperPrep and also played defense where he turned in 97 tackles and 12 stops behind the line … As a junior, he threw the discus 142-foot-6 to win the state title.

PERSONAL
Graduated in December, 2003 with a degree in Marketing … Currently carries a 3.27 GPA and is enrolled in graduate school … Son of Tommy and Vera Britt … Brothers, Taylor and Justin, also play for the Crimson Tide … Born Nov. 21, 1981 … Resides in Cullman, Ala.

I think that we can let neal walk in FA. I see Kaczur stepping in at RG and Britt at RT. Our line will look like
Light-Mankins-Koppen-Kaczur-Britt.
