With the Pats looking at $9M under the cap (as reported here earlier) and $7M dedicated to the rookie pool (again, as reported here earlier) is it more and more likely that Assante will play under the franchise tag all season or is there still a chance that we lock him up?

He's got to be ticked looking at the money spent on AD.

Assuming a long-term deal can be worked out with Assante, it actually presents some flexibilty. If there is a need the deal can be structured to provide cap relief and additional money to spend this year. If that's not heeded then it cam be structured with a $7 million salary for this year with a lower cap figure in 08 and 09.
