A lot of pundits/websites etc. have created formulas to predict what teams are capable of winning the Super Bowl this year. One stat that I found pretty interesting (I think Mike Shanahan talked about it a couple of years ago) is that pretty much every recent Super Bowl winner has been in the top 10 in the league in points scored and points against. I looked at the last twenty years or so and it really is true, no team has been outside the top 10 in scoring defense and only a few have been outside the top 10 for points scored. I think scoring defense is probably the most important stat - the '06 Jets, Pats, Chargers, Ravens, and Bears
are in this years top 10.

The list (PS=Points scored PA=Points against)

85 Bears PS 2 PA 1
86 NYG PS 8 PA 2
87 Wash PS 5 PA 6
88 SF PS 7 PA 8
89 SF PS 1 PA 3
90 NYG PS 15 PA 1
91 Wash PS 1 PA 2
92 Dal PS 2 PA 5
93 Dal PS 2 PA 2
94 SF PS 1 PA 6
95 Dal PS 3 PA 3
96 GB PS 1 PA 1
97 Den PS 1 PA 7
98 Den PS 2 PA 8
99 StL PS 1 PA 4
00 Bal PS 14 PA 1
01 NE PS 6 PA 6
02 TB PS 18 PA 1
03 NE PS 12 PA 1
04 NE PS 4 PA 2
05 Pitt PS 9 PA 3

You need a good offense and a good defense to win a championship???

That Shanahan is a Shanagenius!

I don't even like Shanahan but he is a good coach - he has won two Super Bowls and has beaten the Patriots more than his share of times. His observation is simple but very true. That would seem to not bode well for the Colts again - 3rd in points scored and 23rd in points allowed in 2006.
