COLTS INSTALLING NEW SYNTHETIC TURF BY MAY

Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS -- The worst playing surface in the NFL will be replaced by a new synthetic turf for the 2005 season.

The city's Capital Improvement Board has approved $800,000 for a new field for the Indianapolis Colts along with $900,000 for a hard cover to protect the turf when the RCA Dome hosts nonfootball events.

The 8-year-old AstroTurf in the downtown stadium was voted the worst surface in the league, according to a survey of 1,514 players by the NFL Players Association two weeks ago.

The top four fields in the survey of players -- Tampa Bay's Raymond James Stadium, Arizona's Sun Devil Stadium, Carolina's Bank of America Stadium and Houston's Reliant Stadium -- all have natural grass. The fifth-best, Seattle's Qwest Field, has FieldTurf, the same playing surface the Colts installed in their indoor practice facility.

Other possibilities for the RCA Dome include Sportexe Momentum, which is used in Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium and the Superdome in New Orleans, and AstroPlay, which is used in Buffalo's Ralph Wilson Stadium.

"It was a mutual agreement that the days of the (AstroTurf) that has been in the dome are numbered," Pete Ward, the Colts' senior executive vice president, told the Indianapolis Star. He said the team and the CIB "agreed that some form of the new technology was the best way to go."

The new surface is expected to be installed by May and ready for use when the Colts open their preseason schedule in August. It will not be ready for the NFL scouting combine, which begins next week. Some prospective NFL players have declined to run a 40-yard-dash on the RCA Dome turf, preferring instead to do that at private workouts.

It's a great move by them.

All that old stuff should be removed from all facilities. Too many injuries on Astroturf.

Domes suck. Colts fans will never have a moment like the snow-tossing Miami game.

First time I have heard of this.

Let me ask you guys something.

What could possibly go wrong when running 40-yard-dash on astroturf?

It hurts like a mofo if you fall down and hit the turf. Also, if your foot got caught... watch out

Whyn't you ask that guy who played for the Bears and blew out both his knees on a single play at the old Veterans Stadium in Philly?

Wow, and it does't look like the Colts are paying a dime, must be nice.

waaaa waaaaa

excuses excuses they have more of them then my daughter sheesh... All they do is whine and complain when they gonna realize they just suck. haha. They must be right begind the raider fans with the whining and complaining grow already for crying out loud. For as long as you have to play the pats you wont ever get that far face the facts bb and company have your number..lol:eek:  :p

So Indy is getting a new turf thats equivalent to the Fifth Best field in the NFL, AND the taxpayers are footing the bill. Not a bad deal. if you ask me.

The best part though is how the Colts have the Mayor, Bart Peterson, in their back pocket. Heres a guy that Publiclly says he wants to build casinos to pay $46 millon Annually for the cost of a new Stadium.

And the indianapolisians rejected it. Good for them! I think your looking at the end of the Colts in Indianapolis. Can you say L.A.?

Dred, If you somehow manage to keep your team, Don't go crying becouse the tax rate is so high you can't afford shoes for your feet or food for your table. Kerosene is a good alternative to Electricity. And a good wood stove should give off enough heat so you don't freeze to death becouse you can't afford heating oil anymore.
