Alice asked the question in the Pats vs. Tits thread how the Titans got their name and it was never answered. Since I can't reply to threads from this computer - but can start a new one and just ran across the info, decided to share it here.

The New York Titans were an original AFL franchise founded in '60 and owned by a strange and contentious guy named Harry Wismer. The team was fairly successful on the field but couldn't draw flies so he sold the franchise for 1 Million bucks to Sonny Werblin who rechristened the franchise as the New York Jets. The rest is history.

Now many years later Bud Adams - the owner of the Houston Oilers, vacated Houston for a sweetheart deal in Tennessee and they decided to cut some ties with the past by renaming the team. Titans was chosen in part because that area of Tenn. is nicknamed the "Athens of the South" and the Titans are powerful and mighty beings from Greek mythology. The team logo which is kind of a circle-like thing with flames shooting out of the side is a reference to one of the Titans, Prometheus who stuck a torch into the sun to bring fire to the earth. The baby blue in their color scheme is a tip of the cap to their heritage as the Oilers.

Just thought I'd clear that little matter up so that we can all get some sleep before the game.
