Manning named to chair of UMass trustees board
By Associated Press | Friday, December 14, 2007 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Local Politics
The president of a major asset management firm has been unanimously elected chairman of the University of Massachusetts’ board of trustees.
Robert Manning, CEO of MFS Investment Management, graduated from UMass-Lowell in 1984. As of September, his company managed more than $204 billion in assets for more than five million investors.
Manning, a Swampscott resident, says he’s "deeply honored" to lead the board and would work to make UMass one of the world’s pre-eminent public universities.
Manning has been serving as chair since Stephen Tocco stepped down last month.
Tocco resigned as Governor Deval Patrick reportedly lined up support among the trustees to force him out. Patrick had tried unsuccessfully in September to remove Tocco, an appointee of Governor Mitt Romney.
