Here's the list of Patriots' impact (IMO) free agents after the 2007 season:

Caldwell
Samuel
Wilson
Gaffney
Paxton
Scott

To look at this year's draft and free agent class without taking a gander at this group is shortsighted. The 2008 FAs look heavy at WR and DB.

Therefore I think WR, CB, FS are all likely candidates to be upgraded come draft time in the early rounds. I suspect BB and Pioli will backfill the LB spot the way they always do: free agency.

Samuel will have a new long term deal soon. That is why they put the franchise tag on him.
Wilson will get a new deal before this coming season is over. If they move him back to CB it will be done sooner. If Gaffney develops like he looks like he could they will keep him.
If Caldwell plays as well as last season he will get resigned. Scott is darn near retirement at 33 this year. Paxton is a big time fixture and as only a Long snapper he will have very limited offers.
I don't think you will see the Patriots only go with FAs for the LBs this year. Guys like Anthony Spencer only come around once in a great while.
