Let's all get fit

I opened a can of worms I'm not really interested in following right now. It was a mistake on my part, so please accept my apology.

That's a great way to lose weight:jester:

Some thoughts (as if anyone cares):

My secret? I'm eating less, and getting off of my ass more.

Amazing concept, isn't it? ;)

If I stopped drinking beer I'd drop some weight.

Most people I know who stop drinking will lose 5-15 pounds within 8 weeks and changing nothing else. Not a scientific study, but I consider myself "into" this kind of stuff (also my wife is a professional personal trainer/nutritionist/group fitness instructor).

Just find something you like to do.

Bingo bango. If you don't like it, you're less likely to keep it up. I hate cardio, and only do more than 30 minutes 2-3 times per week when I'm in a fat loss phase...and that's forced.

P90x. Welcome to the gun show.

P90/P90 Masters/P90x.. no excuse not to do it since it's only 30 min to an hour everyday. :D

I didn't care for P90x, but I can see how it would work for a lot of people.

The key thing I've heard from anyone who has lost weight AND kept it off was to find something you really like to do.

Bingo bango. ;)

I do CrossFit myself,

I don't care for their diet recommendations, but I've never done CrossFit myself. Heard great things, though.

*****

Eat right.

Exercise.

It's really that easy.

Let me repeat that: Eat right and exercise. It's really that easy. Now,

Take the stairs instead of the elevator.

Stay active.

Look up the nutritional info of the restaurant you're about to go to.

Weight training AND cardio.

  • The more muscle you have, the more calories your body burns at rest
  • Weight training has an affect on the metabolism that raises it for up to 48 hours after your workout
  • Ladies, unless you're on steroids, you're not going to bulk up by lifting weights.
Eat foods as close to their natural state as possible. For example:

Apple > Applesauce > Apple juice > Apple Pie

Health truly is an example of mind over body. If the mind is determined and disciplined enough, the body will follow.

I don't do the "diet part" of Crossfit myself, just the workouts. to be honest, the entire group I do crossfit with don't do the diet either.
(I'm not even sure what the diet part is)

Crossfit is said to push the paleo-diet, which I'm not a fan of. Not to say it doesn't work for some people, but I'm just not a fan of it long term. I've also heard it is pushed harder at some CrossFits than others.

There's a lot of good information out there. BFFM & PN come to mind. Most of it is common sense, though.

Weight loss is a weird, weird thing. You can go a week holding the same weight, then two days in a row, you're down a pound a day.

Probably helps that I switched from the canned light iced coffee crap to some real, fresh coffee, and I'm suddenly real regular, ifyaknowwhatimean.

So, I put on some weight over the past few years. You know how you convince yourself that you still look pretty good? Well, I went to a wedding in May, and the photos told the truth.
I was in the same boat back in December. Started seeing pictures and couldn't stand what i was looking at.
I was up around 230 which SHOCKED me.
I altered my diet and started exercising.

I'm now under 190. I lost most of it by June. I've leveled off this summer (my summer goal was to maintain my weight)... cookouts and good beer will do that. I'm actually going to stop drinking for a couple of months to see if I can lose the last 15 or so lbs that i want before my wedding in January.

Congrats to you... it certainly feels good

I was always a really skinny person, like size 2 skinny. When I stopped doing drugs and went to rehab in 2005 I put on 50lb in about 3 months. I went from about 95 to 145 lbs and I am 5'2" tall. I needed about 20 of those pounds, but I was really self-conscious about the rest of the weight. Some of it came off when I got back to a normal lifestyle, but there has always been an extra 15-20 that I wanted to get rid of. Since i am lazy, I never really tried hard enough. When I broke up with dick-wad about 6 weeks ago, I was so depressed. I could not eat anything and all I did was walk the dog because I couldn't sleep either. I lost 17 pounds in 2 weeks. Now I know this is not a healthy way to lose weight, but I would really like to keep it off and lose about 5 more. I still walk Buster for about an hour every day, and sometimes eating is still a struggle. Anyhow, I am at 122 lb now and would like to get down to about 115. So how am I gonna get rid of another 5-10 lbs? They say the last few are the hardest.

Go figure the summer is over and I finally look good in a bathing suit.

I had a doctors app in jan and wieght was 292 , I knew it was gonna be high but didn't think it would be that high I stopped wieghing myself when i hit 275.

I go every 6 months to the doctor , one is a check-up the other a full physical,
at my next app in july I wieghed 250, and I guess that wasn't good enough for
the doctor he said for my hieght 6'5" i should be in the 210-220 range i set my
goal at 230 for my next app and am currently at 238. i don't want to go anyless
than 230.

looking back it was hard to get started but once you notice the wieght coming off
it got easy, I basically stopped drinking all soda and beer and cut out all chips and cup cakes, I drink only water and green Tea and eat lots of fruit and for food its
lots of salads with grilled chicken , baked fish, tuna from the can.

For exercise I work-out with wieghts 3-4 times a week and walk 3 miles a day.

I know most people who lose wieght put most of it back on but i know for a fact
i won't be going back to those old habits and set long term goals so I will stay at
it for a long time.

Thanx to this thread it helped me get my ass out of bed early enough in the morning to have time to exercise. I've been parking as far away from the building as I can and going for walks at lunchtime but it's not nearly enough.

So this morning I got on the treadmill for a 1/2 hour and burned 200 calories. Now if I can keep that up along with what I normally do and stay away from the junk foods, I should be good.

One of the hard things for me is finding some sort of healthy snacks to eat while I'm at home. I bring fruit (normally strawberries and grapes) to work for snack along with applesauce but I can't bring myself to eat that stuff when I'm hungry at home. There it's pretzels and wheat thins at the best and chips or ice cream at the worst. I just need more motivation and discipline.

Awesome!

Do you have a Trader Joe's nearby?

These things are quite good, and only 120 calories per serving. And a serving is 38 crisps. Try them with some salsa, or they're good on their own, as well.

I've heard of them so I would think they're around somewhere.

Wow!! 38 crisps to a serving? I was looking at crackers the other day...thinking they were something healthy...and saw that they were 160 calories a serving. That wasn't so bad until I saw that the serving was 5 CRACKERS!!!!

:banghead:

We've also been eating these:

<img src="http://taylorshocks.files.wordpress.com/2010/04/446843421_80da51f303.jpg">

They're pretty substantial, range from 140-160 calories per sandwich, depending on the flavor, and they're really good (and available at any grocery). I haven't missed regular ice cream, at all.
