Question about signing bonuses

I'm in a discussion with a friend and there's one thing we're not clear on.

If a player signs a 5 year deal, with a 20 million signing bonus which is prorated evenly over the 5 years, but gets cut after the 1st year, does the remaining 16 million count against the cap for 1 year, over the next 4, not at all etc.?
