I didn't see a post game thread yet so I threw this together.

I didn't see much of the game live but took a look after watching the Tebow show. My DVR missed the first Bill's drive so I won't comment on that disaster. I was just going to comment a bit but I saw some interesting stuff and got carried away. Hopefully, no one minds me indulging myself. And no Lisa, it didn't take 50 hours!!!

I started off with the Pats first drive which was an ugly affair. Gronk was beaten on both of those initial runs which led to the breakdowns there.

The Pats were working their man coverages on the Bill's second drive. Say what you want about BB but's he doesn't give up. He's been tinkering w/his man schemes all year and the tinkering continues. Chung was back and maned up on a slot while Arrington was shadowing Stevie Johnson. The Pats executed some positive plays but executed poorly on critical downs. Jones shit the bed on the Bills big fourth down pick-up. Patricia had set-up a double team on Johnson with Mayo inside and Jones outside. For some reason, Jones doesn't maintain his outside leverage and allows Johnson to break free outside for the first down pick-up. Mayo gets on him for the lapse. Cross and Crique are talking about rubs and crossing routes but neither took place here. It was poor execution and poor execution only that caused that breakdown.

On Johnson's TD, the Pats were in Man and had been giving up inside breaking routes. Patricia set Arrington up with hard inside leverage to take away any in breaking route. Johnson ran a beautiful route where he attacked Arrington's inside leverage to freeze him before breaking back outside for the TD into the void his route created. This was masterful route running.

The Pats responded w/a two back offense featuring a real full-back. They ran a G scheme power. BB must have been impressed with the success Denver had running this scheme at the Pats a few weeks ago because he installed it for use this week. Unfortunately the Pats executed the scheme as it if had just been installed this week. Gronk ran into the same problem Denver's TE did on the play Carter was injured on, blocking the kick-out man. At the same, the Bills' rookie LB Shepard put on a clinic on shedding an Olineman. If you want to see how it's done, take a look at Sheppard de-cleating Connolly on the second level on this play (5:05 of the first). Lisa, this was so sweet I watched it about thirty times!

After that poorly executed play, Brady saw that Welk was singled up on a soft CB (aligned 8 yards off the ball in an 8 man front vs the Pats Load formation) and threw the Smoke screen out to Welk, who dropped it. This was a running play called by BOB but Brady had the green light to throw to the uncovered receiver to keep the defense honest. Everyone else is executing the run play except for Brady and Welk. Two poorly executed plays put the Pats in an early 3rd & 8 hole.

The Pats went w/a big five step pass but the blocking broke down immediately as both Brian Waters and Matt Light were beat right off the snap. Light gets credit for giving up the sack but it was really on Waters. Brady would have stepped up beyond Light's man if Water's had been stouter inside.
Randy Cross "Light hasn't played in awhile." Yea, he missed a whole week.

The Bills executed a nice cross grain PA pass to open their next drive. They had noticed the Pats trying to use their back-side Slot defender as a cut-back player to free their DE's up to penetrate and work down the LOS in the run game. The Bills countered here with this play. Niko and Warren read this but Jones was fast flowing to the cut-back and was out of position on the TE. Well executed by the Bills.

On 2nd and 4, the Bills go empty and beat Fletcher on a quick slant from their inside slot to the two receiver side. Another nice route by the receiver who attacks Fletcher's outside leverage to gain room to work inside. Mayo was playing the three receiver side leaving Fletch on his own. This was well run and well timed by Fitz.

On first down the Bill's went with a play-action boot for a nice completion. Jones gets beat on a nice throw on the run by Fitz.

The Pats switched up and went with a pattern reading zone coverage. On first and 10, Fitz attacks Fletcher again. Fletch is using a trail technique to prevent the number 2 receiver working the seam from cutting inside but the receiver faked an outside cut to gain room inside which was well executed and timed for a big gain. The Bills have been attacking Jones and Fletcher in this man and zone coverage and getting it done.

Watching the Bills here is like watching the 2007-2009 Pats as so many of these concepts were Pats staples back then.

The Bills run Spiller on a draw on the next play. Take a look at Mayo and compare his technique taking on a blocker with the technique we saw from Sheppard earlier. It's like night and day. Spiller ran through his old buddy Gerard Warren's arm tackle on this play.

The Bills went after Fletcher again here for a TD. The ran a version of a simple under play on the two receiver side of an empty formation. Fitz threw underneath to Spiller who schooled Fletch in the open field. If you watch the play, you can see that Fletcher is the QB's read here. If he steps up on the short level, the QB throws to the deep man behind him who is really just clearing out here, if Fletch drops under the deep spot route, he throws to the short one, which is what happened here. This play has been a staple of both the Pats and Colt's offenses for years. Fletch actually played it well but he just can't match-up with Spiller athletically.

The Bills are using the Pats' philosophy against them. Sending in a group that can run the ball keeping run game personnel on the field for the Pats. The Pats are playing nickle but are still out manned here. They don't want to go dime because of the run threat, but loose the match-up advantage when the Bills split Spiller out in empty. It's been a rough first quarter for Fletch and Jones. Gailey came into the game with a great game plan to gain match-ups and exploit them.

The offense needed to get something going and called on Brady and Hernandez. The Bills were misaligned here because a player was late getting on the field and thought Brady was going to check to a bubble screen because of the two on one leverage he had. Instead he stuck with the call, which was a spacing pattern off of I formation play action. If you watch the play post snap you'll see Ridley, Gronk and Hernandez form a triangle for Brady to read.

Pats go no huddle and hit Gronk on a simple quick game over/under between Gronk and Hernandez. This is the play the Pats killed the Cowboys with late in that game.

That's the quarter. Pretty much a train wreck on both sides of the ball. Poor offensive execution and serious match-up problems on defense need addressing. I like that the Pats were trying to establish the run to wear the Bills down and get that part of their game cooking but the offensive coaches can't be happy with the execution. The defensive coaches need to adjust in a hurry to get the match-ups back in their favor.

The Pats go back to the run to open the second quarter and stick with the no huddle. The Pats are running a one back power from a pro-slot formation w/Ridley. Wendell missed his block on the filling dual safety but Ridley showed his skill bouncing the ball outside Hernandez and under the free CB on the edge.

No huddle, same formation, Brady audibles the play, this is a four receiver route off a six man TE protection where Welk and Hernandez cross each other setting up a three level look with Ridley as the check down. The Bills did not execute this well with two defenders chasing Welk and two closing on Ridley leaving no one on Hernandez. The replay shows Welk running a purpose route under Hernandez's defender while Hernandez runs a nice route where he jukes the defender to gain room inside while at the same time Welk's route comes into play forcing the defender to go around him to track down Hernandez. Welker is tracking the defender's inside hip here to set the rub.

No huddle, Brady hits Welk on a Fade/Out combo with Welk running the Out room the slot. If the Bills were in a single high safety coverage, Welk would have continued up the Seam but since it was a dual safety look with the Seam capped by the quarter safety, Welk broke this to the outside.

No huddle, outside zone with Ridley went no where. Waters and Gronkowski both crapped the bed on this play. Both of these guys will benefit from the bye week as they are tired players right now.

W/no real sneak threat this week, Pats go compressed 2X2 here on 3rd & 1 and run Middy's favorite short yardage play, the Toss sweep to the left. The compressed formation shortens the edge for Ridley. It's not all that well executed but Ridley makes it go with his power, using his pads to get on the second level.

A man blocked Dive from the gun fails to get in. It was damn close though.

In comes the Fullback and Bennie channels Marcus Allen for a TD over the top on a lead play. Nice drive to get back in the game. Pats went back to what they run well and executed far better on this drive. Polite had a nice block on Sheppard on the TD here.

Lets see what adjustments BB and the defensive staff came up with. Bills go inside zone. Spiller has to bounce it outside because of the great jobs Shaun Ellis and Gerard Warren did here. Arrington, playing safety, fills the alley hard to make the stop at the LOS. Arrington had been playing the motion receiver man up but he and Chung switched responsibilities once the receiver settled. The Pats expected this run here, they've seen this one before. The switch put Arrington down low as a strong-safety. A nice GP call by Patricia.

The Bills spread it out here. The first thing I see is that Fletcher and Jones are on the bench in favor of Edelman and Spikes. Fitz had to pull it down and run and took a hit from Edelman.

Pats followed up w/a Fire zone but the Bills had called a timely screen which was well executed. Spiller is a weapon when he gets some space.

Pats sticking with Edelman and Spikes. The Bills got people open here but Anderson had a great rush for a hit and sack on Fitz just as he was loading up. BB declined the holding call. Anderson used a great inside fake to set this hit up.

2nd & 18, same defensive group, Fitz lost his mechanics here and unleashed a poor throw. Spikes did a nice job jammed the TE on the play.

3rd & 18, Pats switch up sending Fletch back on the field with a three DL group. Interesting seeing McCourty at Safety with Chung, yet another experiment by BB as he continues to search for answers. Coverage does a great job forcing the check down and punt to give themselves a shot to get back in this thing.

Fitz has really only taken one hit so far in this game but it turned him into a pumpkin. He's totally lost his pocket discipline.

Pats go empty, but with a two back group that includes Polite and Ridley split wide. Now we see one of the things BOB was setting up with the two back run game we saw earlier. The Bills are not prepared and stick with a base coverage wasting their CBs aligned on the RBs setting up Gronk, Welk & Hernandez against LBs across the board. Brady goes to Welk for a short pick-up.

Compressed 2X2. Last time we got a Toss. This time we get a reverse to Edelman off that same Toss action. BOB is using his early game script to set up these later plays. Barnett recognized it and limited the damage although Edelman did PU the first.

Pats go empty again this time from a one back group and put Ridley in the weakside slot, keeping Buffalo off balance. This is that same slant vs man coverage we saw against Denver where Hernandez runs the slant to open up the slide for Welk. Welk got himself croaked by a pursuing DLineman while trying to gain extra yards inside. If you watch it, you notice how shallow Hernandez's slant is. This adjustment gets him under the man defender aligned on Welk, preventing him from covering Welk's slide.

Pats in a pro-slot from the same group (which includes Ocho). An inside single back power goes nowhere. The Bills killed this by playing man free to maintain a seven man box against the slot look outnumbering the Pats at the POA. Seven against six is a loosing proposition. Brady probably would have been better off audibling out of this.

Third and 1 again. The Pats have been faced with a lot of short yardage and goalline situations in recent weeks which has stressed their game plans. Not being in position to sneak Brady put further stress on this part of their GP this week. Here, they go to the air and run what's called a mini-curl from a short yardage set. Gronk clears out while Hernandez runs the Mini-Curl and Polite runs the slide. This attacks single high safety coverages. The key to this play is putting the Flat defender in conflict and for the Mini-curl to gain width on its initial release. The Pats get both here with a nice outside leverage release against the Flat defender jam by Hernandez. Polite attracts the Flat defender who leaves Hernandez allowing him to settle and sit down his mini-curl for the first down pick-up. This was not ideal but it worked. The Bills were not prepared for this as they were more concerned with getting depth.

The Pats come back with a tackle pull one back power (called dash by many). This attacks the far C-gap. The Pats showed Bunch earlier in the game and got an alignment from the Bills they liked. They had seen on film that this play could attack that alignment and BOB called it here. You can see the Bills are expecting pass here as they get into their pass drops before the ball is even snapped. This was a nice change up BOB used to keep the Bills off balance. Even when Ridley had the ball in his hands most of the second level defenders are preoccupied with disrupting the bunch releases and have no idea this is a run. This was a great call.

Hernandez scores off a PA Pass of a draw look. The Bills are off balance at this point. This is a Fade/Seam combo from a compressed formation which surprised the Bills. The Pats have run this frequently from different TE/Wing combinations. It's run just like any other Fade/Seam combo except that the Fade runner (Hernandez has to gain a 45 degree outside release). This is a nice play to watch because you get to see Hernandez adjust his Fade to the dual safety look. Gronk executes a seam read bend working with Welker's under route) to control the dual field field safety while Hernandez reads the CB to the Safety. The CB squats so Hernandez settles down in the hole between the CB and the Safety for a beautiful touch pass. We usually see Branch making this Fade adjustment against dual safety looks from a split position. Here, we see the same read and reaction from a compressed formation. A well designed and very pretty play.

Pats answer with Spikes and Edelman again. As many have said, Edelman is a better DB than some of the other people BB has been trotting out there recently. Fitz hits Spiller on an Angle route which he's running against Mayo who recognizes it pretty quick and is able to adjust. Spikes recognized it right off the bat and beat a downfield block to make the initial hit on Spiller.

Same group against an empty look. Seeing Spikes matched up in the slot on Spiller is scary but he can't be any worse than Fletcher was. This was a nice switch release Drive stolen right from the Pats' playbook (actually Bill Walsh's playbook) right here that was well executed. Mayo and Edelman didn't recognize it quick enough to counter it.

Arrington gets burned on a Shake and Go on the next play. The Shake is a route that attacks dual cover safeties and man corners with an inside release and a vertical climb of the stem followed by an outside break. The receiver here shows the inside release (called a seam release) but then Fades back outside on a quick Go instead of the outside break. Arrington is playing Shake and gets caught.

Bills go empty with the Pats showing pressure from a soft four deep look. The Bills'center gets spooked puts the snap on the ground, a nice break for the Pats.

2nd & 19. Bills go four verticals which the outside receivers break to comebacks because the Pats are playing soft. Fitz looses his mechanics again (no body rotation) and misses wildly. The Bills went full slide protection leaving the RB on Deadrick. Fitz looks terrified and just flings the ball out of there.

3rd & 19 The Pats use Fletcher here lined up as an inside rusher. He fakes the rush and then drops out as a "rat in the hole" which was discussed last week. His job is to kill any crossing route which he does well within the chuck zone. He and Digbo take away the crossing route, the outside receiver is doubled by Arrington and Chung, Moore and McCorty are working the other side of the field with Edelman on the slot disrupting his release. Mayo manned up the RB. Fitz has no where to go and runs for a decent gain.

4th & 12 Pats are in a zero man scheme here. Chung comes free and Fitz has no where to go because his inside receiver did not recognize the blitz and did not adjust his route, he should have sat down off his break. Fitz just put it up for grabs. A great call.

Pats start off with Woody on an outside zone for four.

No huddle, Bills decide to bring heat. Pats go four verticals. Bills decide to play soft safety man on Gronk to keep a tight body on Welk. Gronk sees his Seam is capped by the safety and breaks the Seam to an out. Nice quick response to the pressure package. Give the Safety credit for making a solid tackle limiting the damage.

1st & 10 2x2 Pats run a version of the Drive for a nice completion to Gronk. The Drive features two crossers, one high, one low, coming from the same side of the formation. The QB reads the LB. If he drops, hit the low route. If he sits or walls, hit the deep route. Here, the LB tried to wall off Hernandez opening the throw to Gronk. BOB used Woody as a low crosser under Hernandez to clarify the read.

Pats in Spread, Brady hits Woody coming out of the backfield, either Solder or Kelsay are miked up in this game as you can hear Solder strike him on his pass rush. Bills were manned up.

2nd & 4 Spread Brady and Welk were not on the same page here. Welk sat and came in, Brady threw to where he sat. Welk is a little pissed.

This leads to a hold on the Woody Draw setting up third and Long. Brady again misses Welk (getting him killed in the process) and getting intercepted. This time, Welk sat, and Brady thought he was going to move inside, the exact opposite of what happened on the previous play. These guys have had quite a few miscues in recent weeks.

Pats brought the heat again. It's interesting what Patricia and BB are doing with McCorty. They are using him as a man defender on the inside against vertical routes. He's been getting smoked outside in these situations and they're trying to find a place where he can play man up successfully so that they can make use of their pressure prackage. Here, the Pats faked a blitz and then dropped Mayo out hoping to draw a sight adjustment to a crossing route that Mayo could Rob. Fitz had a nice two level under throw to his left here that was open but he was working the other side of the formation and missed his opportunity.

2nd & 5 Fitz turfed a Fade/Out throw to the out. His mechanics really go to crap when the pressure is on. Jones was on the coverage back on the field as the Dime defender.

3rd & 5, Pats went fire zone and got burned on a quick spot route. The route was probably a site adjustment to the defensive call.

1st & 10 15 seconds to go in the half. Bills just being careful trying to set up the FG attempt. Chung got on Edelman for giving too much initial cushion.

2nd & 4 10 seconds. Fitz tried to go back shoulder. The receiver had gained separation, a regular firm Fade throw many have been good for a TD there. A misread by Fitz leads to the missed FG.

A lot was happening in that half. Offensively, the Pats wanted to establish the run and used early calls to set up other calls and got themselves on track although the poor execution leading to slow starts and the continued issues betwen Brady and Welk are concerning.

Defensively, we found out that asking Fletcher to cover superior athletes in space in a loosing proposition and that Jones isn't ready to execute complex coverage schemes just yet. We found that Spikes and Chung bring an element that is so important to this defense. They hit, they get excited and they execute. Edelman has been a godsend. He's doing a great job defensively right now. So far, since he replaced Jones, the defense has executed far better.

BB is still experimenting, trying to find out how to make his pressure packages work. Some good and bad but after the initial disaster, a very well executed series of critical calls helped slow the bleeding. Its nice seeing Shaun Ellis playing and playing well. He's getting active out there. Even though the defense was bled dry early, it was encouraging to see all the complex calls being used. The Pats weren't making these calls a month ago. It's a good sign.

We also found out that the Bills have a good ILB in Burnett, a nice rookie LB is Shepard, some nice Dlinemen and receivers and a QB who is more than solid when things are going well. However, as soon as the pressure was on, he went to crap. He needs to improve his poise if he's going to develop into a top flight signal caller.

I'm looking forward to watching the second half tomorrow.

Holy shit! I've gotten through two paragraphs in the first post, I'm cracking up, and I've decided that this needs to be read in installments.

ROFL

I can't believe you did this tonight. Very fast work. I wasn't expecting it for at least two days.

I think that was just the first half.

Thanks AWTE. I feel good about NE's defense, and your post explains why I do. Looking forward to part 2

Eh......feel good about them? I can't go that far.

First, I've read it through, AWTE, but I will definitely have to read through it again tomorrow when I'm not as tired. Great observations, as usual, enlightening some of us to a lot of things that certainly I don't see when I'm watching the game.

Second, I didn't realize until the very end that this was only two quarters. Will await your second-half analysis with bated breath.

Third, I'm really glad that someone other than Paz and I has commented on what a phenomenal job Julian is doing as a DB. I thought the defense changed for the significant better when he came in today. He's an incredibly smart player, very fast, and reads things much quicker than a lot of the other DBs. He should find a home in that position.

I'm not crazy about Wendell and Connelly being on the line together. Individually, they suffice. Together, they'll get Brady killed.

Besides the Brady/Welker off-rhythm, I thought Brady was throwing too many low fast balls, not only to Welker but also to Gronk. He also overthrew a sure TD to Ocho who had his defender beat and a wide open field in front of him. Can't remember what quarter that was, so maybe it was in the 3rd and you'll cover it tomorrow.

Great stuff, as usual. I look forward to the next chapter(s). Please don't stay up all night on my account reviewing it another 30 times.

If the defense that played today for three quarters plays in the playoff game, I'll feel pretty good about it.

Midgar, this was a very good defensive showing today. I get that the first quarter sucked, but it sucked equally on offense. I have no problem with the way this team is playing right now, other than the slow starts for which adjustments are being made brilliantly.

The offense was not really on the field much in the first quarter....I have no problem with the win, but lets just say, if we had a medicore offense like the ravens, I am not sure we are in the playoffs. Giving up 3 straight drives for td's to the bills was not great...I would rather see this team come out and actually take a lead, I am wondering if its the best Idea to keep throwing the defense out there first. Getting behind 21 0 to the bills is one thing, we do that against a good team, we lose.

I thought when BoB went ballistic during a sideline meeting the offense suddenly showed up...

They were playing fine before that actually. It was like he did that way late and after the fact. He should have did that after the first quarter, I think the pats already scored twice when he did that.

Eh they were playing a bit better, but still losing and their execution was still a bit off,and it showed with those two redzone field goals...

Wow!! Great analysis!! I read through the entire thing!!

It will be interesting to see what BB will bring to the table for our first playoff game.

Every game for the past 6 games, our defense has shat the bed for the 1st and/or the 2nd quarter, and had left us to left that we are doomed with the worst defense for eternity.

But miraculously, some adjustment is made and all of a sudden we are Superbowl bound. Why can't we just start out strong???

"Tinkering" and "more complex schemes" are things that give me hope for the defense.

BB has been doing a lot of tinkering on defense for the past few games, using guys in odd positions (for them) - almost as if he's been using Q1 as an extended practice session (perhaps Q4 against the Colts). One result is that a lot of guys now have experience seeing the field and reading from a lot of different perspectives (whether they've executed well/consistently from those positions or not). Another result is that he probably now has a fairly complete (and possibly large) "book" on what will work that has enabled him to run "more complex schemes" with greater confidence.

The point being that the tinkering is pretty much over. They now have a couple weeks in which to rehearse to death those things that work well and those things that have been close to working well. That may be just enough to put together an adequate 60-minute defense.

BTW - I'd like to hear what folks think about the play of both Molden (who looked like crap early, but looked much better later) and of Sterling Moore.

Awful start - but again, encouraging that our defense is capable of getting hot.

I can't tell if I should be frightened by the defense that NE played, or encouraged that they could intentionally fall behind 21-0 to make it a true bookend and still take the Bills behind the woodshed.

Even without reading AWTE's post, I could tell that NE was doing some new stuff. I'll get through more of your post and add some replies later.
