Casinos Suck

You may recall that a few months back I had a thread called "Luck of the non-Irish" about a time I won nearly $200 at a casino by playing slots with "matchplay" money, i.e. free slot credits given away as a promotion.

What I didn't tell you is that the next weekend, we went back and at one point I was up over $400... but I didn't stop. I'm tempted to say I "couldn't" stop, but that would imply that I didn't have control, which I did. Anyway, I lost EVERYTHING and put $20 of my own money determined to get back to that point. I finally got back up to a little over $100, then I started slipping again and cashed out.

I was mad at myself for a good couple weeks after that. You could say that I just learned a hard lesson - everybody has lucky streaks at the slots, mine just came in the beginning. But it's my fault because I did what I always said I wouldn't do, i.e. not knowing when to quit.

That $400 would have covered a car payment with a little left over. But noooo, I thought, "If I'm up $400 already, I can be up $800 soon! Or $1,200! Or $2,000!!!" :shake:

Like I said, I didn't really "lose" anything because 99% of what I was playing with was the "free money" I got from the promotion. But it's still hard to stomach that I had $400 of unearned cash I could have walked away with and I blew it.

But that's true of a lot of things in my life. At different times I've said I would never drive drunk, treat a girlfriend or wife the way I saw another man treat his, abuse credit cards, etc.; and eventually I did all those things. Likewise I said when it came to gambling I would have to know when to quit and that day I didn't. :suicide:

As for the whole probability/percentages thing, I did some research after this happened. I had been operating on the old assumption that the odds are if you stay at the same slot machine long enough, you'll hit the jackpot. That used to be true, but not anymore. Today's slots are run on computerized randomizing programs that have eliminated that possibility. :Lecture:

Gambling is fun, but I probably won't go again anytime soon until they have another one of those promotions. Otherwise the odds just seem like you're throwing your money away. At least with lottery tickets the money you lose goes to a good cause (though it's debatable whether giving free cash to the government constitutes a "good cause") rather than just going to whomever owns the casino (in this state they're all owned by Native Americans.)

And the way I blow "money" at blackjack in the casino here at the Planet, no way in hell am I playing with real money.

IMO slot machines suck. I hate em and never play on them! Atleast with video poker I have somewhat control.

Yes, it's very sophisticated nowadays. There have always been rumors that you should play machines near a casino entrance or a food area, because they want people to hear the machines paying off, but I think those machines may pay off more frequently but they pay off smaller amounts. Another thing people don't realize is that even the "mechanical reel" slots nowadays are computerized. If you walk by a slot machine that isn't in use, it's still "playing" inside. If you could listen to it making invisible payoffs, it might be going, "0, 0, 10, 0, 5, 2, 5, 0, 200, 0, 2, 50, 10, 0, 1, 2, 0, 4999, 0...." You just have to be lucky enough to put your quarter in and press "Spin" at the right time. As soon as you hit "Spin", the machine already knows what you're going to get!

I love Casinos. 95% of the time I play Craps. Craps has the best odds in a casino if you play the right way...notwithstanding what everyone wrote about BJ.

House has a .2% advantage when played correctly.

Craps is the most fun game in any casino...when you hear people hootin and hollerin...it's at the Craps table.

Also, you at least have some control over what happens because YOU throw the dice.

I have actually won between 500 and 2500 eight of ther last nine times to Foxwoods and the one time I lost was a grand.

I have brought back more money than I went with every single time I went to vegas and that includes tipping doorman to get into clubs, limo's to get around and all the other BS that costs $ when on vacation.

When I went on a cruise 2 years ago, I payed my $2,000.00 liquor bill then next morning after hitting $2,500.00 on the craps table the night before.

Came home with 200 less than I started with and that includes tipping the waiter and buying bottles on the island and renting jetski's and buying gifts.

I hit $800.00 on a slot in Aruba during my honeymoon and stopped gambling right there. Woke up the next morning and bought Movado watches for me and the Mrs. $500.00 for mine $300.00 for hers.

If you have a system and stick with it and don't deviate from it and have enough coin to withstand some bad shooters on the table...craps is the way to go.

Yes, the ones I play are always the "reel" ones, I don't like video slots.

My wife and I like the video slots because of the interactive bonus rounds.

(But, as I said in my post, the "reel" machines are just as computerized as the video ones...)

LOL. The responses in this thread, when read one by one, sound reasonable. But read en masse they're laughable. Some folks claim they win all the time. Others admit they lose but that what they get for free from the casinos more than compensates. Jeezus are you people being played. Do you think casinos operate at a loss? Where do you think the money comes from to pay your winnings and "free" comps? Do you seriously believe the casinos are eating the cost of that cheap meal? They're not that stupid. The cost is passed back to you via the druggie that smashes your car window to steal your stereo, the family on public assistance you pay for cuz daddy has a gambling problem, the extra police details that get sucked up by your tax dollars. No such thing as a free lunch, and no shortage of suckers that will buy into the prospect.

Wow. All that from my twenty bucks in a slot machine? :shake: I'm evil.

The druggie who smashes my car window does so because he's on drugs.

The family is on public assistance because their daddy has no willpower.

The police will find some other detail to stand around and suck up tax dollars (and, oh, BTW, police details don't get paid by your tax dollars, they get paid by the company who needs the detail).

What part didn't you understand where we said that a lot of us look at it as disposable entertainment income? Or where people specified that they like to play high-percentage table games and avoid the slots? What's "laughable" is you preaching to us. We get it. You think casinos are the debbil, because apparently they took you for a lot of money or something. Good for you. One less person I have to fight for a parking spot when I go. :D

None of us are under the assumption that Casino's operate at a loss. All I was trying to point out is that there is a way to go to the Casino and have fun without losing your shirt. You're more than welcome to shake your head at me (and others) if you want. But I'm telling you the truth when I say that the last 3 times I've played Craps at Foxwoods I've left "up".

For example, when my wife brought me to Foxwoods for my birthday last Fall, we got there Saturday night and ate dinner at a high-end Steak house (paid for by our Wampum Cards), we then played craps for a few hours and went to bed up a combined $1200 (drank for free the entire time as well), the next morning we ate breakfast (paid for by our Wampum Cards) and gambled for a few more hours. This time we lost a combined $300. We then checked out of the hotel (which we paid for with our Wampum Cards).

So in the end not only did we NOT spend a dime of our own money on rooms, meals, or drinks, but we also made $900.

How can you beat that? If she took me up to Maine for the weekend we would've shelled out at least $800 on a room, meals, drinks, etc.

The cost is passed back to you via the druggie that smashes your car window to steal your stereo, the family on public assistance you pay for cuz daddy has a gambling problem, the extra police details that get sucked up by your tax dollars. When a druggie smashed my car window and stole my GPS last year I didn't blame Foxwoods or any form of legalized gambling. I blamed his drug addiction. I have no idea what legalized gambling has to do with drug addiction.

Most families are on public assistance because daddy disappeared long ago, not because he has a gambling problem.

I've never seen a police detail at Foxwoods, and as was pointed out by another poster, details get paid with private money, not public.

I'm not sure why you hold such disdain towards those of us who like to gamble, I'm just pointing out that we are not all degenerates. I'm a responsible father who has never been late paying a bill, I coach tee-ball, go to town meeting, and mow my lawn on the weekends, but I also like playing Craps and enjoy the excitement & action that a Casino has to offer.:toast:

Well speaking of Casinos I am going to Foxwoods Saturday! LOL I will have lots of fun! :)

Druggies can't afford to go to Casinos believe me I was engaged to one :) He couldn't even afford himself.
