How Bill Belichick has the Patriots’ pass defense among the league’s best

Interesting article here.

Lot's of X's & O's with film to back it up.
Awesome stuff. You folks keep posting good stuff like this and I might (might!) get bearable in game threads.

Nah....

It is a major superweapon to routinely keep developing all-pro cornerbacks who were undrafted or low draft picks.

Also huge kudos to coach Steve Belichick where it seems over the last several years whatever he coaches ends up being elite (safeties, CB's, outside linebackers, etc).

It's cool to see the breakdown of how they achieve pass rush success using only 4 guys. Judon against a right tackle is an advantage.

But the rest of the article is a bit off. The Pats didn't adjust to man cover-1, they've used it for 20 years! Man cover-1 has been the staple of every single Superbowl-winning team. Belichick ALWAYS has success the most using elite man-coverage CB's and 1 deep free safety. It was not a change in scheme to cover-1 as the article author suggests. The Patriots always did this and never changed, except for the crappy Dean Pees era from 2008-2012 of soft zone with cornerbacks way off the LOS and always gave up an easy 3rd down. Besides that it has always been man-cover1.

The article talks about shifting to cover 1, but it specifically says it's by a few percentage points.
