Yea TIP, might well be worth it...! I think only he and Stix Hooper remain from the core of the Crusaders now, as Joe Sample, Wilton Felder and Wayne Handerson have all passed on.

The Dells - 5 Chicagoland teens from the early 50's Go from early doo-wop, too soul. to Jazz staying together overr six decades led by the great Marvin Junior. Phenomial longevity and phenominal music all the way.

Couple of my earliest fave's and all time classics with the fabulous CBS emmy doc in 3 pieces. Nostalgia is personnal and ineluctably bound in sounds of the years you were coming of age. I am in the throes here of great nostalgia.

When I was a kid, my Mom always had her radio going, I used to hear this one a lot:

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/-aWkhuAu8go" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Song: Southbound
Artist: The Allman Brothers Band

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/VI2EIlpblOk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

One of my favorites by them. Sadly, it doesn't get nearly the amount of attention it deserves.

Another seldom played Allmans gem, Greg never sounded better on the vocals IMO:

For some reason, this one popped in my mind while I was taking my shower, and I haven't heard it in years...!

Song: Life Sucks Then You Die
Artist: The Fools

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/gejSEOnaYek" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Lyrics are NSFW.

Song: Rhapsody In Blue
Artist: Deodato

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/CynBrweG-L4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Two drummers are listed on the album credits, but I'd guess that it was Billy Cobham playing on this song.

Yea TIP, Deodato - don't know if I have ever posted this one before or not, this is the live version of "Superstrut" from the Mississippi River Festival back in 1974. I used to hear it on KTCL Ft Collins a lot:

Cool. Very few radio stations like that then (or now).

Yea TIP, back in the mid to late 70's, through the early 80's they were fabulous. KTCL was a privately owned,100,000W beacon of pure musical ecstasy. The DJ's played what they liked, be it blues, jazz, acoustic, reggae, obscure R&R, country rock, etc etc. They were a delight to listen to, and that really doesn't do them justice. They even did their own commercials most of the time. The owner finally sold them out to some commercial outfit around 1983 or so, and that was that. The only thing that comes close to them today is Sirius's "Deep Tracks" channel, it's good, but it's not at the KTCL level. I'm just glad my ears had "exposure" to them back in those days. I shall give them a :toast:

Back in those days, mu little 11 transistor radio would gleefully pull in the 50,ooo watt clear channels like WOWO, Fort Wayne; WBAL, Baltimore, KDKA, Pitsburgh, WWVA, Wheeling, and more. But never heard, or even heard of I believe, KTCL before this thread. And damn, I"m sorry I never got to listen,

Cheers

BT- KTCL was an FM station, not AM, so it's signal didn't bounce off the ionosphere like AM did. It was based in Ft. Collins, Co, but with a 100K transmitter it was strong and could reach Denver, about 75 miles to the south which is where I was. Sorry you missed them, they were amazing, lots of spacey jazz, blues, etc - a real eclectic mix of music that was the best I have ever heard.

Song: Last Train Home
Artist: Pat Metheny Group

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Ac9x6BcQLjc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

From "Still Life (Talking)" - released 30 years ago.

Pat Metheny and KTCL went together like hand in glove. I first heard this incredible live version of "San Lorenzo" about 1978 or so, it was from a 4 song EP (extended play) released to radio stations only. Of course, they jumped on it, often playing all 4 songs together at night. Had to wait a bit while they flipped the record over....I do miss those days:

Miss them too. Remember sometines the DJ ducks out for a piss and gets back late and the record spins on and on with the hissing noise?

Cheers

Yes, you bet, I remember that happening a couple times....! Or, they may have been out indulging in a few other well known activities of the times. :toast:
