Patriots/Titans Game Thread - 1pm est

The Pats have been stopping the run well today but in this drive they have let up.

Nice hold by 76 on Bruschi.... no wonder Henry had a good run!

Your front 3 are Green, Wright, and Hill - and they are running at Hill. It's a learning curve thing folks, the game was won by the starters, now just enjoy.
Pretty sure I saw Warren in there on two of the long runs.

It was interesting watching the America's Game show on the 1990 Giants. When they were talking about the Superbowl game plan that went to Canton - BB told the D to alow Thurman Thomas to gain a 100 yds, but to limit YAC by the WRs and beat them up. Twisty fellow that Belichick.

The Patriots announced Harrison's return as questionable.

Smith in
Le Kevin Smith has entered the game at nose tackle for the Patriots, as the team begins to rotate some different personnel into the game. Smith was drafted in the sixth round out of Nebraska and this is his most extended playing time.

Eric Alexander is also seeing some time at inside linebacker on early downs, as the Patriots rotate their linebackers. Mike Vrabel has moved to the outside opposite of Rosevelt Colvin, while Alexander has paired with Tedy Bruschi inside.

Well it's good news that Rodney walked out under his own power. I still remember what happened the last time he took a hit like that. Let's all hope that it's not to serious.

Pats' inactives

Inactive players for the Patriots today:

C/G Gene Mruczkowski
OT Wesley Britt
WR Bam Childress
RB Kevin Faulk
CB/S Chad Scott
TE Benjamin Watson
NT Vince Wilfork
Vinny Testaverde -- 3rd quarterback

Inactive analysis

Analysis from the Patriots’ inactive players and what that could mean for others today:

* With offensive tackle Wesley Britt out, that bumps rookie Ryan O’Callaghan into the tackle mix. O’Callaghan, who has worked solely at right tackle and has been limited by a neck injury of late, had been inactive the last four games. That makes Nick Kaczur the swing tackle today.

* With center/guard Gene Mruczkowski out, the Patriots have Russ Hochstein as their top interior backup.

* With receiver Bam Childress out, the team dresses five receivers -- Reche Caldwell, Troy Brown, Jabar Gaffney, Kelvin Kight and Chad Jackson. Childress was the sixth player on the depth chart last week in terms of snaps played.

* With running back Kevin Faulk out, the Patriots lose their most productive back in the passing game. Faulk is often in the game on third down and obvious passing situations. The Patriots are likely to turn to rookie Laurence Maroney in that role.

* With cornerback/safety Chad Scott out, the Patriots are expected to turn to Ellis Hobbs for the second week in a row as a starter at cornerback. Scott has made nine starts this season (8 at corner, 1 at safety) and his loss pushes players like Ray Mickens, Willie Andrews and Antwain Spann another notch up the cornerback depth chart.

* With tight end Benjamin Watson out, the Patriots will dress two tight ends -- Daniel Graham and David Thomas. As has been the case the previous two weeks, Thomas is expected to fill the void left by Watson.

* With nose tackle Vince Wilfork out, the Patriots are expected to have second-year player Mike Wright start for the third straight week. If the Patriots elect to play younger players later in the game, it will also be an opportunity for rookie Le Kevin Smith to get some time at nose tackle, with Wright possibly moving to end.

* With Vinny Testaverde as the third quarterback, the Patriots have Tom Brady and Matt Cassel as their two active signal-callers for the 16th game this season. This is the seventh week that Testaverde has filled that role since signing with the team Nov. 14.

Local ties

The Titans announced that rookie Sean Conover will start today's game at defensive end in place of Travis LaBoy. Conover has strong ties to Massachusetts, as he was born in Brockton and attended Whitman-Hanson High School.

The 6-foot-5, 272-pound Conover, who starred in college at Bucknell, began the year on the Titans' practice squad. He was signed to the active roster prior to the 11th game of the season and has played in five games, with one start. Tennessee coaches have credited him with 17 tackles (1 for loss) and two quarterback pressures.

Nickel look

When the Patriots went to their nickel package on the Titans' first offensive possession, Ty Warren, Mike Wright and Richard Seymour came off the field.

They were replaced by defensive lineman Jarvis Green, safety James Sanders, and linebacker Eric Alexander.

That's an expanded role for Alexander, who is usually a core special teams player.

Evans & Cassel

One unexpected personnel move for the Patriots has come on third down offensively. With Kevin Faulk out today, the team has turned to Heath Evans in its third-down offense.

Also, backup QB Matt Cassel is serving as the team's holder on field goals for the second week in a row.

Dillon's catch

RB Corey Dillon's 52-yard reception on a screen pass in the first quarter established a new career high for the 10-year veteran. Dillon's previous high was a 41-yard reception, vs. Tampa Bay on Dec. 27, 1998.

PAT blocked

Stephen Gostkowski had his first extra point attempt blocked this season. He entered the game 36 of 36 on PATs this season. Gostkowski was checking the chewed up field after the miss, as he apparently lost his footing.

Green's day

DE Jarvis Green recorded a strip sack for the second week in a row, jarring the ball loose from Vince Young, with the Patriots recovering late in the first quarter. Green now has 7.5 sacks on the season, which ties him with Rosevelt Colvin for the top mark on the team.
