We won our 3rd SB in 2004, and then the bottom of our defense fell out:

- The OLB corps fell apart - McGinest got old and left after 2005, Vrabel started to get old and was a shadow of himself by 2008, Colvin was banged up.
- The ILB corps fell apart - Tedy Bruschi had a devastating stroke and never returned to his previous form before retiring in 2009; Ted Johnson unexpectedly retired; and the loss of Roman Pfifer left us short at cover LB
- The Secondary collapsed - Ty Law got old and then left; Rodney got old and injury prone before retiring in 2009; Asante Samuel developed nicely but then left after 2007; Eugene Wilson regressed from his 2003-2004 form and then left.

Only the DL remained consistently excellent from 2005-2009. The Seymour trade obviously had an impact, but an infusion of talent and the development of Mike Wright kept the DL fairly strong, if not quite at it's previous level.

We seem to finally be on the road to rebuilding the defense:

1. With the addition of Brandon Spikes we now have the best 4 man ILB rotation we've had since our SB years in Mayo, Spikes, Mackenzie and Guyton. Mackenzie and Spikes will have a learning curve in 2010, but by 2011 we should have a really strong and cohesive group, with a nice blend of size, speed and skills.

2. The rebuilding of the secondary seems essentially complete. The addition of Devin McCourty gives us 5 solid playmakers (Bodden, Butler, McCourty, Meriweather, and Chung, assuming Chung makes the usual 2nd year progression) and a bevy of solid role players (Sanders, McGowan, Wilhite, Wheatley, Springs).

We still need to tweak the pass rush (though hopefully Jermaine Cunningham will help, and we could add another pass rusher later in this draft) and the DL, but the defense seems to finally be the most solid that it has been since the SB years. With 4 picks in the first 2 rounds in 2011, we should be in position to add the finishing touches on rebuilding the defense to a SB caliber unit.

Guys I'd like to see us target on day 3 include:

- DE Corey Wootten or Clifton Geathers
- DE/OLB Everson Griffen or Eric Norwood (some would add Ricky Sapp)

2011 prospects who could be major additions (depending on how we address needs later in this draft) include:

- DE Cameron Heyward, Jared Crick and Cameron Jordan
- DE/OLB Robert Quinn, Greg Romeus and Jeremy Beal

I'm finally beginning to feel good about getting back to having a SB-caliber defense.

The McCourty pick cemented it for me. The importance of a disruptive in your face cover corner cannot be underestimated. Teams like the Clots rely on timing. Put a Ty Law clone in their face and it doesn't work any more. That gives time to the front to get to the Forehead. Life just got a lot better for the D.

Gronk interview shows him to be a nice, thankful, shy but confident big kid; reminiscent of Ben Coates with the ball, only better balance

"My only concern with him are the rumors of spinal stenosis, but they're not true. He and his doctor say he has a clean bill of health, as did Dr. James Andrews, and I did a little research into the procedure he had. It was strictly a procedure to shave down bone on a vertebrae, it did not involve his spinal cord or any muscles in his back. The procedure would not have anything to do with a narrowing of the spinal column, nor would it exacerbate an existing condition, because it is not a structural operation. No muscle or ligament is cut, and no joint is altered, so the function of the back is not in any way compromised. The purpose of the surgery is actually to relieve leg pain that originates in the lumbar region. His agent (Drew Rosenhaus) also flatly denied rumors of stenosis and said that every team that examined him at the combine gave him a clean bill of health."

(ugh, drew rosenhaus)

Actually I don't mind Rosenhaus, he always does a good job for his players but doesn't go out of his way to screw teams over. Patriots have always had a decent relationship with him. He represents Darius Butler, and we didn't have any problems there last year.

If the rumors are not true, why would you still have one concern?

Brandon Spikes
This kid has some passion and fire in him. He will bring some nastiness back to the Pats' defense. He reminds me of Ray Lewis. Great nose for the ball.

Jermaine Cunningham McGinest-like DE/OLB

In this video, Miss.St. runs away from Cunningham the entire game. Great individual plays by Cunningham beginning at 4:30.

Good to hear, thanks. Could be much worse, I guess

The concern was only that it would hurt Gronk's draft position. The rumors were the concern; not his health.

pretty happy with the defensive picks, but as I'm still believe in the cliche defence wins championships I would do

Taylor Price

Price is #8; projected 1st rounder

A nice showing at the Senior Bowl started with an excellent week of practices. With all due respect to his Bobcats teammates, it was a telling sign once he was surrounded by better talent, most notably at quarterback. He’s wiry strong and uses his decent size to adjust to poorly thrown balls.
Price is a shifty, tough, and very fast receiver (4.35 – 4.40) with the skill-set to start immediately at the slot position or quite possibly as a No. 2 receiver.

His QB is just awful and although Price gets clearly frustrated at times, he never quits.

Good list. We got another guy on their list in Brandon Spikes. And their are 2 more guys on their list who are on my short list of guys to get day 3 - DE Corey Wootten and RB Jonathan Dwyer. Those guys would be steals.
