I’ve been thinking of this thread for a long time. I figured I’d sit on it until the slow season commenced and with the early knockout here we are.
The thread is obviously about any band you like a lot and if you were going to recommend them what would be their song you’d suggest.
I’ll kick it off:
Metallica
Signature song? So many, but feet to the fire I’d go with ...
Fade to Black
The song encompasses everything Metallica does well. Pure melodies. Hard edgy transitions. And lyrically it’s one of their finest:
Life it seems to fade away
Drifting further everyday
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free
Things not what they used to be
Missing one inside of me
Deathly loss this can't be real
Cannot stand this hell I feel
Emptiness is filling me
To the point of agony
Growing darkness taking dawn
I was me but now, he's gone
No one but me can save myself, but its too late
Now I can't think, think why I should even try
Yesterday seems as though it never existed
Death greets me warm, now I will just say goodbye
Goodbye
Now it does sound despondent. But that is in part with the feelings behind the song, that I’m sure not everyone is familiar with. It has direct Boston roots.

The year was 1984 and Metallica was touring the US in support of their album Ride The Lightning. Unfortunately for them, the new year was not off to a good start.
After they played Boston's Channel Club on January 14th, the band soon discovered that some locals had stolen their gear from their van just outside the venue. None of the band members took the theft harder than Hetfield, who at the time became very reliant on a certain Marshall amplifier that helped him deliver the kind of sound he wanted.
Now In the middle of a tour with no equipment, Metallica were able to borrow some gear from Anthrax to get them through the remainder of their dates.
Decades later, a similar story hit the news about Blistered Earth, a Metallica cover band from Portland, Oregon, had their van and all of their equipment stolen. After Metallica heard about the story, they reached out to Blistered Earth and paid for all of their replacement gear!
Anyway, off and running.
Have at it. Any band or artist. Any genre. This could get entertaining.
