I’ve been thinking of this thread for a long time. I figured I’d sit on it until the slow season commenced and with the early knockout here we are.

The thread is obviously about any band you like a lot and if you were going to recommend them what would be their song you’d suggest.

I’ll kick it off:

Metallica

Signature song? So many, but feet to the fire I’d go with ...

Fade to Black

The song encompasses everything Metallica does well. Pure melodies. Hard edgy transitions. And lyrically it’s one of their finest:

Life it seems to fade away
Drifting further everyday
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free
Things not what they used to be
Missing one inside of me
Deathly loss this can't be real
Cannot stand this hell I feel
Emptiness is filling me
To the point of agony
Growing darkness taking dawn
I was me but now, he's gone
No one but me can save myself, but its too late
Now I can't think, think why I should even try
Yesterday seems as though it never existed
Death greets me warm, now I will just say goodbye
Goodbye

Now it does sound despondent. But that is in part with the feelings behind the song, that I’m sure not everyone is familiar with. It has direct Boston roots.

https://waaf.radio.com/blogs/anthon...on-locals-stole-metallicas-gear-out-their-van

The year was 1984 and Metallica was touring the US in support of their album Ride The Lightning. Unfortunately for them, the new year was not off to a good start.

After they played Boston's Channel Club on January 14th, the band soon discovered that some locals had stolen their gear from their van just outside the venue. None of the band members took the theft harder than Hetfield, who at the time became very reliant on a certain Marshall amplifier that helped him deliver the kind of sound he wanted.

Now In the middle of a tour with no equipment, Metallica were able to borrow some gear from Anthrax to get them through the remainder of their dates.

Decades later, a similar story hit the news about Blistered Earth, a Metallica cover band from Portland, Oregon, had their van and all of their equipment stolen. After Metallica heard about the story, they reached out to Blistered Earth and paid for all of their replacement gear!

Anyway, off and running.

Have at it. Any band or artist. Any genre. This could get entertaining.

Favorites change over the course of time as different genres take center stage for me. I'll go with 2 currents-

Fontaines DC- Television Screen-

Saw the ice face fail
For the first time in years
And the water levels rise
'Round the television screens
All your tough man looks
For which you had reserved
For a room full of mirrors

[Chorus]
On the television screen
On the television screen
On the television screen
On the television screen

[Verse 2]
They fell as a child
On the beatdown grass
No cutting, no bruising
Not a mark to be seen
And so some become lost
As their passions will see
Illustrated well
By the television screen
Shall we tangle our thinking?
Shall we give it a name?
Let it sit at the table
Bring it in from the rain
I could lay you right down
On these lively living streets
And still you'd not know
How the city heart beats

Great Van Fleet- Edge of Darkness-

Every day's a new day
Every way's a new way
On the edge of darkness
Finding out what it means to love
And to think we've found the time

[Chorus]
All my brothers we stand
For the peace of the land
Is there meaning
I've got love in my heart
For an army apart
I am bleeding
All my brothers we stand
For the peace of the land
Is there meaning
I've got love in my heart
For an army apart
I am bleeding

Always searching for love
Always searching for light
What the world is made of
When I'm thinking it's right
And to think we've found the time

All my brothers we stand
For the peace of the land
Is there meaning
I've got love in my heart
For army apart
I'm bleeding
All my brothers we stand
For the peace of the land
Is there meaning
I've got love in my heart
For an army apart
I am bleeding

[Refrain]
Yeah, yeah...

[Bridge]
I've got love in my heart
For army apart
I am bleeding

[Chorus]
All my brothers we stand
For the peace of the land
Is there meaning
I've got love in my heart
For an army apart
I am bleeding

MY favorite band has been Queen since the first time I heard Bohemian Rhapsody back in '75. Their catalog is full of iconic hits and Bohemian Rhapsody would be an easy choice, but my favorite is The Show Must Go On.

It was recorded towards the end of Freddie's life. It was written primarily by Brian May as a tribute to Freddie's desire to continue performing despite how ill he was. Legend has it that Freddie was having trouble recording it, and as May has said:

Recalling Mercury's performance, May states; "I said, 'Fred, I don't know if this is going to be possible to sing.' And he went, 'I'll fucking do it, darling' — vodka down — and went in and killed it, completely lacerated that vocal".

The Show Must Go on

Empty spaces, what are we living for?
Abandoned places, I guess we know the score, on and on
Does anybody know what we are looking for?
Another hero, another mindless crime
Behind the curtain, in the pantomime
Hold the line
Does anybody want to take it anymore?
The show must go on
The show must go on, yeah
Inside my heart is breaking
My makeup may be flaking
But my smile, still, stays on
Whatever happens, I'll leave it all to chance
Another heartache, another failed romance, on and on
Does anybody know what we are living for?
I guess I'm learning
I must be warmer now
I'll soon be turning, round the corner now
Outside the dawn is breaking
But inside in the dark I'm aching to be free
The show must go on
The show must go on
Inside my heart is breaking
My makeup may be flaking
But my smile, still, stays on
My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies
Fairy tales of yesterday, grow but never die
I can fly, my friends
The show must go on
The show must go on
I'll face it with a grin
I'm never giving in
On with the show
I'll top the bill
I'll overkill
I have to find the will to carry on
On with the show
Show
Show must go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on

After just getting done listening to "La Villa Strangiato" I would answer with Rush. But tomorrow I might well answer with Supertramp or Zeppelin or Floyd or Dire Straits. At least on the rock side of things ;-)

It’s not singular peeps.

List as many as you want.

My first influence was KISS.

I’d have to go Detroit Rock City.

Led Zeppelin - Black Dog
Rush - Red Barchetta
Megadeth - Peace Sells
Elton John - Bennie and the Jets

"Drive"

Who's gonna tell you when
It's too late
Who's gonna tell you things
Aren't so great

You can't go on thinking
Nothing's wrong, oh oh
Who's gonna drive you home
Tonight

Who's gonna pick you up
When you fall
Who's gonna hang it up
When you call
Who's gonna pay attention
To your dreams
Yeah, who's gonna plug their ears
When you scream

You can't go on thinking
Nothing's wrong, oh oh
Who's gonna drive you home
Tonight

Who's gonna hold you down
When you shake
Who's gonna come around
When you break

You can't go on thinking
Nothing's wrong, oh oh
Who's gonna drive you home
Tonight

You know you can't go on thinking
Nothing's wrong
Who's gonna drive you home
Tonight

High Hopes (Early Version) [1994 Recording]
Pink Floyd

Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young
In a world of magnets and miracles
Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary
The ringing of the division bell had begun
Along the Long Road and on down the Causeway
Do they still meet there by the Cut
There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps
Running before times took our dreams away
Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground
To a life consumed by slow decay
The grass was greener
The light was brighter
When friends surrounded
The nights of wonder
Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us
To a glimpse of how green it was on the other side
Steps taken forwards but sleepwalking back again
Dragged by the force of some in a tide
At a higher altitude with flag unfurled
We reached the dizzy heights of that dreamed of world
Encumbered forever by desire and ambition
There's a hunger still unsatisfied
Our weary eyes still stray to the horizon
Though down this road we've been so many times
The grass was greener
The light was brighter
The taste was sweeter
The nights of wonder
With friends surrounded
The dawn mist glowing
The water flowing
The endless river
Forever and ever

The Who - I'm One, from Quadrophenia ...

Every year is the same
And I feel it again
I'm a loser, no chance to win
Leaves start fallin'
Come down is callin'
Loneliness starts sinking in

But I'm one
I am one
And I can see
That this is me
And I will be
You'll all see
I'm the one

Where do you get
Those blue, blue jeans
Faded, patched secret so tight?
Where do you get
That walk oh so lean?
Your shoes and your shirt's all just right

I'm one
I am one
And I can see
That this is me
And I will be
You'll all see
I'm the one

I got a Gibson
Without a case
But I can't get that even tanned look on my face
Ill fitting clothes
And I blend in the crowd
Fingers so clumsy
Voice too loud

But I'm one
I am one
And I can see
That this is me
And I will be
You'll all see

I'm the one

I'm the one
I'm the one

Killing Joke- Love Like Blood

https://youtu.be/VOxgcYWZzio

We must play our lives like soldiers in the field
The life is short
I'm running faster all the time
Strength and beauty destined to decay

So cut the rose in full bloom
'Til the fearless come and the act is done

A love like blood
A love like blood
'Til the fearless come and the act is done

A love like blood
A love like blood

Everyday through all frustration and despair

Love and hate fight with burning hearts
'Til legends live and man is god again

And self-preservation rules the day no more
We must dream of promised lands and fields
That's never fade in season
As we move towards no end
We learn to die
Red tears are shed on gray
'Til the fearless come and the act is done

'Til the fearless come and the act is done

Skold - What you see is what you get

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsXpNiEsmOg

Trapped beneath the noise, stuck in undertow
I know it's the end of the road
Still the gospel rage and the cold bloodflow
I know

What you see is what you get
Nothing more and nothing less
What you see is what you get
No excuses, no regrets
So hold on tight and don't forget
What you see is what you get

Cut from bleeding dreams, dust and shattered bones
I know it's the end of the road
Reality collides with the stardust in my eyes
I know

What you see is what you get
Nothing more and nothing less
What you see is what you get
No excuses, no regrets
So hold on tight and don't forget
What you see is what you get

And, out of the black, comes a small ray of light
The light, I walk to the light I'm falling apart at the seams, but I'm here, so lonely
The light goes away and it all turns to black, so black
There's nothing blacker
The life of a friend flashes by, but I'm still here, lonely
What you see is what you get
Nothing more and nothing less

What you see is what you get
No excuses, no regrets
So hold on tight and don't forget
What you see is what you get

Like others said, my favorite band today will be different tomorrow. Lately, since watching the final show from the final tour, Slayer has been on my mind, a lot!

In 1987 or so, I walked into a local record store and found a picture disk of this band I was just starting to get into, Slayer - Welcome to Hell. I took it home and never played it.

In 2004, working at 6 Flags Amphitheater, Slayer was on Ozzfest that year so I brought the Album in and got it signed. It was the first tour with the original band back together. 2 Years later, that album and all my other vinyl albums were stolen :/

As for the signature song, that, too, changes with my moods, but right now, this one as I'm struggling with the one thing I refuse to do willingly, grow older (I'm 55) and doing it alone...

Wasted Years
Iron Maiden
From the coast of gold across the seven seas
I'm traveling on far and wide
But now it seems I'm just a stranger to myself
And all the things I sometimes do, it isn't me but someone else

I close my eyes and think of home
Another city goes by in the night
Ain't it funny how it is, you never miss it 'til it's gone away
And my heart is lying there and will be 'til my dying day

So understand, don't waste your time
Always searching for those wasted years
Face up, make your stand
And realize you're living in the golden years

Too much time on my hands, I got you on my mind
Can't ease this pain so easily
When you can't find the words to say
It's hard to make it through another day
And it makes me wanna cry and throw my hands up to the sky

So understand, don't waste your time
Always searching for those wasted years
Face up, make your stand
And realize you're living in the golden years

I'm traveling on
I'm traveling on
I'm traveling

So understand, don't waste your time
Always searching for those wasted years
Face up, make your stand
And realize you're living in the golden years

Again, I guess I’m not ’splaining it well. List as often as you want. Not just your all time favorite band. Bands you like and what you consider their signature tune.

Btw, GREAT Maiden tune. It might be mine too, but push comes to shove I’d likely go Hallowed Be Thy Name. But Wasted Years shows me you’re a hardcore Maiden fan though, so rock on!

hadn't had much exposure to these guys until I saw them open for Tool. Great live show.

The Cars first two albums were phenomenal. I wasn't a big fan of their work after that.

My favorite is Good Times Roll from the debut album.

Was thinking the same thing and was going to respond to BSF but couldn’t choose between yours, You’re All I’ve Got Tonite and Moving In Stereo.

Not a fan of the turn they took.

Pink Floyd is my favorite followed closely by Tool and Slayer. I've seen em all at least once and some a bunch.

But here's something from Type O' Negative. So many great songs to choose from and I saw them a ton of times at relatively small clubs in NE before Peter Steele died. We became very good friends and lotsa fun on the tour bus after some shows.

Sounds like a family suicide but it was about Peters damn cat. :) They were so tongue firmly planted in cheek that it was hysterical watching the goths that attended the shows get all lovey with their Black No. 1 died hair partners over songs like Christian Woman.

Just too perfect.

Bloody Kisses (A Death in the Family)

Type O Negative

Not long ago but far away
A rainy winter's day
All her pain she kept inside
Could no longer hide
No cry for help
She killed herself
Both life & love could not be saved
She took them both to the grave
A pair of souls become undone
Where were two now one
divided by this wall of death
I soon will join you yet
With my blood I'll find your love
You found the strength to end you life
As you did so shall I
Oh no
Please don't go
It's like a death in the family
A crimson pool so warm and deep
Lulls me to an endless sleep
Your hand in mine - I will be brave
Take me from this earth
An endless night - this, the end of life
From the dark I feel your lips
And I taste your bloody kiss
Oh no
Please don't go
It's like a death in the family
Don't die on me
Don't die on me
Don't die on me
don't' die

This is the very first song I ever heard by Metallica and when I heard it I remember thinking to myself, "wtf is this". That was probably around the 1984 time frame and was the hardest song I had ever heard on the radio. It is still one of my all time favorites by them.

Trapped Under Ice

I don't know how to live trough this hell
Woken up, I'm still locked in this shell
Frozen soul, frozen down to the core
Break the ice, I can't take anymore

Freezing
Can't move at all

Screaming
Can't hear my call

I am dying to live

Cry out
I'm trapped under ice

Crystallized, as I lay here and rest
Eyes of glass stare directly at death
From deep sleep I have broken away
No one knows, no one hears what I say

Freezing
Can't move at all

Screaming
Can't hear my call

I am dying to live
Cry out
I'm trapped under ice

Scream from my soul
Fate, mystified
Hell, forever more
Scream from my soul
Fate, mystified
Hell, forever more

No release from my cryonic state
What is this I've been stricken by fate
Wrapped up tight, cannot move, can't break free
Hand of doom has a tight grip on me

Freezing
Can't move at all
Screaming
Can't hear my call
I am dying to live
Cry out
I'm trapped under ice

Freezing
Can't move at all
Screaming
Can't hear my call
I am dying to live
Cry out
I'm trapped under ice
