Celtics

Dad loved the Celtics. Back (way back) in my day, (in the Dynasty days), Tickets were cheap and always there. We went to (W.A.G.) maybe 80-100 games (by train from Gloucester rfght to the Garden). And I loved Red. Waited for him to light up. Seemed as though he ALWAYS lit up. The greatest MOCK in the annals. Loved falling to sleep on the ride home. The rhythm of the rails was all I'd feel.

BTW. How lucky Can you be. Us Oldies here, have Cheered our way through the two greatest Dynasties in sports.

Cheers, BostonTim

And in addition to the Dynasties, There's Teddy Ballgame, Larry Legend, and the greatest hockey player ever, Mr. Robert Gordon Orr.

Cheers

Never ceases to amaze how successful Boston has been in pro Sports. It’s astonishing that all four major sports leagues has Boston fielding four legendary, winning teams. No other city comes close.

I’d love to read an in depth study some day as to how this came about and how it is sustained.

The spirit, will and varied personalities of the close New England states creates a culture unparalleled I'm any place I've ever experienced.

It is truly unique and worthy of wonder.

This, I think plays a part in creating greatness in the hearts of those special humans who choose to embrace the New England soul.

It's absolutely unparalleled and there's no place actually close. I've thought about it a lot over the years (and I've had MANY years to do it😂) and I think there are several reasons for it. I think the absence, by and large, of big time college sports programs which are perennially dominant makes our pro teams the only shows in town, so to speak. I also think that the four pro teams compete with one another for success and make one another better. No team wants to be the one that sucks while the others thrive. And, while the competition among them is strong and very real, they also support and root for one another. Years ago, the Bruins and Celtics had a rivalry which got nasty at times, particularly behind the scenes. I think that their rivalry still exists, but in a much more benign and gentle way. The bottom line is that all four teams know that if they suck, they'll be left behind in the dust in a hurry.

Yes! This too!

Just look to John Henry's pathological envy of the Patriots.

Yes, I'm not sure I'd use pathological to describe it, but there is something there, for sure. Having a brother-in- law who was on the field for every home game in Foxboro from 1999-2019, I can tell you there has been some of that envy directed toward the Red Sox from the Patriots at times, as well. Honestly, I do think some of that is also just human nature. I think all of us can, at times, like and respect someone and still be envious at times.

Quitters.

Gutless Quitters.

I'm not going to get too excited just yet about the prospects going forward, just because of how badly this Nets team laid down. "Best 7 seed ever" what a fucking joke. :coffee:
I'm not sure what will get you excited about this team I guess, they were the best team in the 2nd half of the season, and their defense wasn't just good it was historically good. They were destroying teams, including playoff teams. And all they did was carry it over into the playoffs against a team everyone was trying to avoid, the Bucks even tanked to avoid them. And hearing Durant talk after the game it didn't sound like he quit, the C's are just in his head...first he said he was too aggressive in games 1 and 2 and forcing the issue, and yesterday he tried to let the game come to him and he wasn't aggressive enough, he's trying he just doesn't know what to do. I've never seen a swarming team defense like this in the 30+ years that I've watched the NBA. So far they are better than the 2004 Pistons team which was the best defensive team I've ever seen. If they win a championship they will be considered as having the best defense ever, some already say they do but I think it's premature.

I will say, the 80’s and 90’s were rough as Boston sports fan. The 80’s Celtics were really the only highlight.

Yeah, but you're going back 30-40 years. Look what's happened since!

I need to see them against a team that's not laying down, I guess. That said, who knows how long the Bucks will be without Middleton, so I guess that leaves Miami? I'm trying to temper expectations, and am hoping the players really are playing into the one-game-at-at-time mindset, or so they say. I think how they close this series out will tell me quite a bit.

If I'm another team in the NBA though, I do not want to play the Celtics right now. Tatum aside, Brown's been owning in big stretches of 4th quarter play, bullying drives to the bucket, just soul-crushing the other team.

I am excited, I'm just tempering things in case they go down 0-2 to Miami or something, I suppose.

Durant took 1 shot in the 4th quarter last night. Sure, a lot of it is defense, and Durant is definitely guessing out there, but Kyrie Irving has been shook since Game 1, and he's cashed out on the series, and they don't have anything resembling a coach, so there's nothing to counter that. The Corpse of Blake Griffin was the best player on the floor for them in the 4th last night.

The 90s, sure. Terrible. Not the 80s, though! Apart from the Celtics, we had WS and SB appearances from the Sox and Pats, and the B's were in the playoffs every year, with a couple of years as contenders. Plus we had other Boston-rrlated sports stories like Esposito, Flutie, and Hagler, off the top of my head.

I love reading this kind of response, other fans from other cities must read that and think, "Yeah, and my diamond shoes are too tight and my wallet is so full of cash I can't close it" :mad1:

Very good points and I was going to mention the college thing in my post. The rooting for each other seems real and genuine and again, not something seen in other cities. I think Bill has been excellent in this regard. The friendship he's shown to Doc Rivers and other Boston coaches has been a great credit to him. He genuinely roots for the other Boston teams.
