It's time to start the list: Pre-draft contacts

My optic nerves got tangled like a baitcast fishing reel reading that name!

I could only imagine Gino on BCN.....

Onobun on NFL workout: 'What can it hurt?'

April 16, 2009, 12:39 a.m.
STEVE RIVERA
Tucson Citizen

Football could be in Fendi Onobun's future.

Over the weekend, the former Arizona basketball player worked out for the New England Patriots, Carolina Panthers and Buffalo Bills. He was joined by former Wildcat football players B.J. Dennard and Marquis Hundley.
-----
The reserve forward never played football, but he has the seemingly perfect build for it. He's 6 feet 6 inches tall, 250 pounds.

That caught the attention of NFL scouts over the weekend.

"It went really well,'' Onobun said.

He said he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds. He had a vertical leap of 37 1/2 inches and his broad jump was 10 feet, 7 inches.

"As far as feedback, I heard I ran really good for a guy my size,'' he said. "Most tight ends were in the 4.6, 4.7 range.''
-----
"My heart is basketball," he said, "but it's not like I have NBA scouts calling me. If someone (in football) wants to take a look, what can it hurt? I'll give it a shot and see what happens.''

Ogletree a fit for Bears if they pass on receiver in second round
By Brad Biggs on April 16, 2009 2:45 PM
-----
That is why we introduced Virginia's Kevin Ogletree as a possibility here. He's gaining some momentum and the Bears might be more comfortable with someone like him and a safety who could compete immediately for a starting job than a receiver like Georgia's Mohamed Massaquoi or Oklahoma's Juaquin Iglesias and a safety later on in the draft.
-----
Ogletree has gotten to know Rex Hogan, who scouts the East for the Bears, and he has had four private workouts recently with Carolina, Miami and New England three of the teams to come in and visit with him. The Bears are not the fourth team. He has good size at 6-1, 196 pounds, and should be able to come in and contribute in some way as a rookie. He likes the fact that the class of receivers he is a part of is considered so strong.

Box, any recent history of players they've picked with no reported interest?

I don't know how long you've been doing such an extensive contact list and if there's been players picked that haven't shown up on the contact sheet in some manner.

Box, any recent history of players they've picked with no reported interest?

I don't know how long you've been doing such an extensive contact list and if there's been players picked that haven't shown up on the contact sheet in some manner.
Happens all the time, with scouts crisscrossing the country, coaches and front office people going hither and yon, some agents report contacts, others work with the team to conceal them, some college administrators and coaches report contacts, some don't, some players gossip with reporters, some don't - I'm just surprised we found as many prospects to list as we did.

Reservist's next mission is NFL Draft | InsideNova.com
Every goal Ernest Robinson has set, he has met; or at least most of it.
-----
Undrafted players have an opportunity to be picked up by teams after the draft as an undrafted free agent, which Robinson foresees as his best chance.
The Denver Broncos, New York Jets, Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers showed early interest in Robinson; the Panthers showing the most interest.
Recently, he was invited to an official tryout by the Philadelphia Eagles that was also attended by the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts.

Updated Ron Brace, Zach Miller, Jamar Love, Golver Quin PW. :coffee:

I'm thinking of Brace as one of my worst nightmares this year.

I wasn't impressed with him when I watched him play at BC and he was widely panned at the Senior Bowl with indications he was fat, out of shape, sucking wind, lost, etc. etc.

Yet, he is one of the only DL's with real 3-4 NT size in this draft and I have a nagging fear that we might force the guy in there (and let Wilfork go) despite the fact that it appears he sucks.

I keep coming back to the notion that the contract situation on the DL is going to need to be addressed even though this is a really crappy year for our kind of guys.

It must be some kind of "they won't take CFB" paranoia on my part.

I hope.

Don't go to that other forum and read the anti-CFB diatribes of the unclean hordes, you would find they would welcome Ron Brace at #23 to play OLB before they'd welcome CFB.

Ron Brace got a Private Workout, Hood and Gilbert had visits, with the exception of O-linemen, visits trump private workouts...though being from a local college Brace could have been brought in as a local visit without it counting against the 30.

Terrence Knighton had a visit and a private workout, he's more likely to be drafted as a reserve NT IMHO.

At least our buddies are preparing us for BB missing on Barwin with their polls and nagging.

I haven't read one word of that stuff other than a link you posted several weeks ago. It wouldn't matter if I had, because I'm pretty sure we are looking at a future star when I watch Barwin, but I will admit that I don't know how much time he would need to matriculate in a system where Mayo's instant competency and quick ascent is a big anomaly.

My only doubt about Barwin is that single year of college defensive experience and whether his apparent intelligence and maturity would be enough to counter that lack of familiarity. I guess to put it a better way the real question is would our guys make the big investment necessary to land him given the time it might take to get him coached up. Nobody can really know that at this point. He could be looked at as a project we can't afford to take on. Mike Vrabel had played D for many years before we acquired him at a much lesser cost. The TE and ST abilities might not get him over the hump.

Regardless of whether they skip on him for that reason or another, Ron Brace would be a disaster at any position. I would hate that selection. Another Gosder Cherilus, but on the other side of the line.

I think he's intelligent enough and works hard enough to be taking garbage reps near the end of year one, plus his TE and STs reps. I think he could be #3 OLB by midseason year two and could be starting year three. I just think he's that kind of kid.

I think that is an entirely reasonable timeline for him, but.....is that worth a late first/early 2nd? I mean would we wait two years?

I would.

Let's put it this way:
Rick Gosselin http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcon...stories/041509dnspodraftseriesdl.36505a5.html
Dan Pompei http://www.chicagotribune.com/sport...20-pompei-draft-defensive-ends,0,295468.story

That's two of the more "connected" reporters out there projecting Barwin in that range. If BB wants him, that's where it needs to happen. Meanwhile, Barwin was worked out privately by TE's Coach Shane Waldron, then brought to Gillette for some chats http://www.nepatriotsdraft.com/2009/04/connor-barwin-patriot-visit-reaction.html.

Take a deep breath and recall that last year Mayo, Wheatley, and Crable all visited Gillette, and before them Meriweather, Maroney, and Mankins all visited. I believe Warren and Graham also visited, I can't speak to Sey and Watson. I think Wilfork didn't even think the Pats were looking at him - I don't see anyone likely to be another Wilfork gift in this draft.

I'd be surprised if Jenkins dropped far enough for NE to make a move. I don't see Davis and his periodic benching making the grade. Alphonso Smith isn't an upgrade over current CBs. Ziggy Hood and Gilbert are competitive in the same range as Barwin. Ayers is anyone's guess as to where he goes. Andre Smith isn't falling far enough. That's the list of likely 1st rounders we know visited. Dante checked out a couple OL who might be high twos, but Barwin has a fighting chance, and that's all we can ask.
