"New England Patriots rookie offensive tackle Marcus Cannon(notes) completes his chemotherapy treatments this week and the prognosis is positive for the fifth-round draft pick from Texas Christian.
Cannon told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that he has only been nauseous once, hasn't lost any hair and hasn't lost weight, maintaining a robust 348 pounds.
And he can bench press 315 pounds eight to nine times.
A positive attitude has boosted his recovery.
"The first thing my mom and my dad told me to do is pray, and here we are today," Cannon said. I'm a fifth-round Patriots draft pick, and half the mass I had is gone. For everybody who doesn't believe, here's your reason to believe. It's a miracle in itself that somebody with a life-threatening disease gets drafted I have a will."
Diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma, Cannon fell in the draft despite teams being told he had a 90-percent chance of a full recovery."
This is some gr8 news for Pats fans. While Ryan Mallett has his share of supporters Cannon is my pick as the biggest steal of the 2011 NFL Draft.
He seems to have suffered relatively minor issues during his chemo treatments and is looking like he will be ready to help this season, and hopefully 10-12 years after that.
Getting an OL mauler mainstay in the 5th round is highway robbery, and considering how well his recovery has gone, is going to have many teams kicking themselves for passing on him.
