Typically you're talking about numbers, like 12321, that are the same backwards as forwards.
But palindromic words are more fun. Both "ma'am" and "madam" are palindromes, but better than that are sentences.
"Madam, I'm Adam." is one, but I like the more complicated (and historically accurate ones better:
"Able was I, ere I saw Elba" (about Napoleon)
"A Man, a Plan, a Canal: Panama" is my absolute favorite, though.
