Anyone want to take a crack at the 53? Here are 39 guys that should be absolute locks under almost any circumstance. Obviously we need more at almost every position, and there are several who are close to locks that I left off. Who can correctly name the other 14?

I’m probably in the minority here but Boutte or however his name is spelled needs to be kept over Pop.
I know pop has shined, but we need to be realistic. Boutte has been a blue chip player since he was in high school, and his ceiling is huge. The Pop story is great this TC, but the odds of him being a long term starter are nill.
I know Im gonna get shredded for this opinion.

Not shredded.

I think you just like to take alternative views to get reactions.

This is a perfect example.

This is allowed, but will be highlighted as silly.

I like Boutte a lot, but we need to be realistic as fans. Boutte played with the slappies while Douglas was hanging with Mac and the top 3 WRs. There is a lot we as fans don't see.

I don't know why you saw his chances of being a long term starter are nil. He is three times the player Troy Brown (who IIRC didn't make the original roster) and Julian Edelman were. Douglas gets open. That is gold.

I would keep both of them and chance Cunningham to make the ps. I think both Boutte and Douglas could be special.

You're right about Boutte's ceiling. But I wasn't giving a recommendation, I was listing people who I think are absolute locks, and it's clear from his usage that Douglas is a roster lock. I strongly suspect that both will be kept.

Marcus????
Yeah, I assume he makes it. But when I was thinking it through I could see a not-insane path to him not making it, so I left him off. I toyed with leaving Guy off, too.

Congratulations, you're down to 13.

I think they keep both.

That's 53 I think.

They will keep Board. BB likes his ST game.

This is tough. IMO, they keep Cunningham because he can play more than just QB. With technically carrying 3 QBs, it eliminates another guy. I really want this offense to keep Bourne, Boutte and Douglas. It won't happen so I believe Boutte probably gets cut even though it hurts me to type this as I loved what I saw from him vs GB.

IMO, DB is the most interesting spot as we have a TON of guys. I trust Bill to make the right call there. I am still worried about FS.

One other note on the WRs, Matthew Slater is a Patriot thru and thru, nothing but love for him, but at 37 years old we need to focus on the future and we can't be cutting some of these young guys who are oozing with potential just to carry a 37 year old special teamer. I believe Boutte's upside could be Keenan Allen, his floor Jabar Gaffney. You don't want to cut young talent like this especially given how hard it has been for the Pats to draft quality receivers.

Whenever I use that roster tool to create a starting lineup, Slater is always an odd duck that makes it difficult because he's not really a wide receiver, but essentially always takes that 6th WR spot every year.

We're going to need that extra roster spot for guys like Boutte, or some young guys we drafted along the offensive line, or for one of the young DBs. Slater helps us this year only, these other guys could help us for the next 5-10

Slater has also lost a few steps, you can see in replays that he's lost his top gear ...

BB values ST's as much as O and D. Matthew Slater is not going anywhere.

At this point I would be willing to gamble Thornton and possibly stashing him on the PS to keep both rookie receivers on the active roster.

Both would potentially be picked up by another team immediately after cut downs.

I may be getting a little ahead of myself, but now I understand what chevss meant when he compared Boutte to Ja'Marr Chase. That slant he took to the house looked very Chase-like. No wasted motion on that run.

It doesn't seem like Thornton is about to have a big rebound sophomore year. At least judging from camp notes and lack of reps.

Our STs were last in the league last year. I mean how much is Slater really going to give us at age 37 compared to keeping a WR like Boutte?

If Slater was not going to be a part of the team, BB would have made him well aware and saved him the embarrassment of riding out a full camp.

I agree. I was not suggesting that he would be a cut but more lamenting that we had him come back in the first place. I think he was about to retire but Bill wanted him back for his leadership.

Preposterous, even to suggest that Slater would be cut. Driving to a meeting I was listening to WEEI briefly and this was mentioned. In case you’re wondering where she gets her material.

LOL. I don't listen to WEEI. And I didn't suggest Slater be cut. I was lamenting that he was asked to come back by Bill in the first place.
