Star DE Dwight Freeney, who is entering the final season of his contract, is looking for a huge extension. Freeney is aiming to be not just the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL, but the highest-paid player, period.

The Colts window just keeps closing, and closing.

 ROFL ROFL ROFL ROFL ROFL ROFL ROFL ROFL

He doesn't really think Manning will let him get paid more than his perfect self does he ?

I don't see how their cap could possibly sustain a contract like that.

i love it.

a one-gap DE whose game (and sacks) are predicated by the colts being so far ahead, that the opposing offense is forced to pass a lot.

when those teams that can limit the colts offense, get the lead and start running, freeney virtually disappears (especially in the playoffs).

2-gap richard seymour is the anchor of a patriots run defense that, with the exception of the 1st 10 games of 2005 (with brown/beisel at IL, duane :Eason: starks in the secondary, rodney gone and seymour missed about 5 games), is one of the more dominant in the league.

some colts fans will point to seymours lack of stats, but there's a good reason for it. even though richard isn't allowed to simply rush the QB, he still gets double and triple teamed, which limits his sacks, but enables vrable, mcginnest, etc. to get to the QB.

as for the lack of monster "tackles made" stats, it's kind of hard for richard to rack up monster stats when opposing offenses refuse to run in his general direction.

bottom line: richard seymour is the anchor of the defensive line of one of the best run defenses in the NFL.

dwight freeney is a pass rushing specialist who, when it comes to smashmouth football, might as well be on the bench.

freeney would be an OLB on the patriots.

and the funny part is polian will pay him.

then the colts will be able to lay claim to two of the most overrated and overpaid players in football.

dwight freeney will become the NFL's defensive version of perfect peyton. ROFL   ROFL

His cap hit this season is about $5 mil. If a new contract isn't signed, he'll be tagged next season.

what's really amusing is that freeney probably really thinks that he is worth that kind of money.

can't blame him though. he's dealing with NFL budget buster bill polian.

What makes him think a DE is going to be the highest-paid player in the league? Everyone knows that top money always goes to QBs or receivers. What a hoser.

Corey Simon plays the same role as Seymour in our defense. He commands double teams and his stats are also not impressive. No other player commands an offense to change the way they block or their scheme like Freeney. Pittsburgh was an exception becuase they rarely run to the outside and do a good job of putting the ball down your throat.

I will check out the article.

two questions:

do you think dwight freeney is worth more than richard seymour?
(i'm sure polian does).

do you think freeney is worth more than peyton manning?

Yes, I think he is better than Seymour. I know a lot of people will disagree from this board but that is expected.

As for Manning? No, he is not worth that much and Im sure noone would pay him that.

That was probably the most "on the money" post that I've ever seen here. I couldn't have said that any better myself. I've been saying the same thing for the last 2 years. People are impressed with Freeney's sack numbers. In the Patriots defense, they aren't overly concerned with sacking the QB as much as they are creating turnovers or forcing the other team to punt.

I love how Colt fans covet stats as much as they do. I think it's hillarious. They must all play fantasy football, because that is all they care about: stats, MVP awards, and in the case of Addai Rookie of the Year.

Beautiful.

Freeney puts up nice sack numbers (There's gotta be a dirty joke in there somewhere). More importantly, though, he draws double and triple-teams, which frees up other linemen rushing the QB, puts pressure on the QB, which leads to rush decisions, which leads to interceptions. As a Colts fan, I'd say many of Freeney's best games have been games where he didn't show up on the stat sheet at all.

He is what he is: a pin your ears back pass rusher when Indy has a big lead. Rack up the stats in garbage time, but when it really matters...... In the Steelers game, he was non-existant against the run, and got fooled badly on play-action. He looked confused in that loss, and badly. He ain't worth that kind of money, IMO.

Oops....that was supposed to be in response to the quoted article:

C'mon... Freeny is an excellent player. You can't denigrate him. He's got a hell of a lot of game.

That being said, he's not the best defensive lineman in the league... That honor is a toss-up between Peppers/Rucker/Jenkins (pick one from the 3 headed Carolina monster... probably Peppers) and Seymour. But Freeny's certainly got to be included in the discussion. His lack of size (and therefore his lack of effectiveness against the run) takes him out of the medal round.

BTW, the Corey Simon to Richard Seymour analogy made no sense at all. Wilfork maybe... but not Seymour

Freeney cannot hold Seymour's jock because he simply cannot do as much. He is a one dimensional pass rusher, PERIOD. Freeney is, in Coaching terms, "upfield like an a**hole" every play, allowing Draws and Off Tackle runs to GASH the Colts D. He plays every down like it is 3rd and 13.

Seymour can provide inside pressure, is a run stopping rock and is nearly impossible to block with one OL. He is the best DL in football. I don;t think you could find a single NFL Coach to make an argument otherwise.
