Kraft In Talks With Wynn For Casino At Gillette

Maybe it's just me, but I just don't understand people. Kraft/Wynn want to build a casino, hotel, restaurants, etc., off to the edge of residential areas, that would offer long-term employment for thousands of people, taxes to bolster their towns coffers and lower their property taxes, and they vote in these two for the SOLE reason that they're anti-casino. It just boggles my mind how short-sighted people are.

I certainly hope there's recourse beyond leaving a decision as big as this in the tiny little hands of a small town Board of Selectmen. This is the same people (with the addition of two new ones) that are spending the town's money to fight a lawsuit about a billboard - on Kraft's property - and are paying attorneys to go up against the army of lawyers that sit around collecting $1000 an hour fees from Robert Kraft. Yeah, and whose going to win there?

I just don't get it.

Eh, I completely support the people of Foxborough on this decision. I understand the ideals for having casinos, but not the reality of it for a small town like Foxborough.

This is just like the plastic-water-bottle-situation in Concord; if people don't want it, then they should have the right to say no.

The people of Foxborough have clearly said no.

If the residents really don't want it, then I support their decision. FWIW, I'm fine with them building one in Worcester.

Plenty of places to put one. I'd absolutely be on board with this. However:

I think at some point though there has to be some nod to where the actual tribal lands are.

The Wampanoag Tribe that finally got recognition (after more than 30 years of trying) is "based", for lack of a better term, in Mashpee. Now, clearly, there's no place to put it in Mashpee, even if you dig up all the conservation land, and traffic would be a nightmare.

That's true of anyplace they put it on the Cape.

Hell, Foxboro's only 50-something miles away from Mashpee. Middleboro's more like 25.

Worcester's 100 miles away from Mashpee. The same distance as Boston to Hartford, CT.

Now, I don't KNOW that the Federal Government (responsible for recognizing tribes) would have a problem with a casino being that far away from where the lands are recognized, in Mashpee - but I could certainly see it being a problem. It's just the sort of thing that would cause a problem.

(So sayeth the former Mashpee and current Worcester resident)

That's why it's been Middleboro, Taunton, places like that.

On the whole, the town of Foxboro wants everything given to them, so long as it's not in their backyard. That's how they are. That's how they've been. That's how they've always been. Shit on everything to do with the football team, but throw a collective hissy-fit when they're going to knock down the racetrack.

That's Foxboro. That's just how it is. It's obnoxious and annoying, and some day the gravy train they've enjoyed will end. Then they can truly be happy when the football team moves, the stores go out of business because they're overpriced and you can get the same shit in Wrentham or N. Attleboro for cheaper, and nothing's left in their backyard except for tumbleweeds.

Then, and only then, will the residents of Foxboro apparently be happy.

Foxboro would have been ideal for the place they were discussing. I type this literally one mile from the Mashpee Tribe headquarters and they really wanted Middleboro. They realize a casino on the Cape isn't happening

One thing that I heard in the meeting I attended agreed with the Globe's report that the casino itself would generate about 2600 permanent jobs. Qualified Wampanoags would get first crack at those jobs per the tribe and they used the word "initially", but nobody knows at this point how many of those jobs would be up for grabs for non-Wampanoags.

It is logical that once the casino is generating revenue that the tribe would do something similar to what the Pequots did with Foxwoods and distribute annual payments to their adult members, which might explain the term "initially". Some tribe members would probably not have to work any longer and those jobs would have to be filled by others, but this is speculation on my part. Logical, but speculation.

Lizzy Warren would be a shoe in to get a job as a blackjack dealer after she loses the election. Either that or maybe she could become a cocktail waitress. She'd kill that outfit.

That annual payment thing would be good too. Kinda make up for the government pension that she'll be missing out on.

Agre with this. Kraft has built a nice place there but with about all of Foxboro's income derived from the stadium being there, you'd think they wouldn't be such hardasses when it comes to Kraft. Not necessarily the casino, but generally being dicks about the Pats.

Too bad Kraft has so much invested in his place there. If it were me, I'd take a loss and move the whole schemiel to Hartford, which is what he should have done way back when. I'd take the hit just to say, Screw you.

That's why Kraft has money and I don't. He's a businessman and always thinks ahead to how actions affect his business's bottom line.

Maybe in 20 years his sons will do it.

It is interesting that the casino is supposed to be approximately half the size of Foxwoods and staffed with 2600 when the number of employees I've seen for Foxwoods is around 10,000. I'm not sure what to make of that.

Right now, Foxwoods is a mess financially, and will suspended payments to tribal members at the end of this year.

Given the local economic climate, its no wonder the Kraft Kasino is off the boards (at least for now).

They did and they do. Middleboro would have been perfect.

Middleboro - Just fine with gigantic garbage transfer stations serving the entire Southeastern MA area, as well as whatever friggin' chemicals Ocean Spray puts into the ground water...

But, **** a casino that would be easily accessed by 3 highways and a commuter rail line, and would create thousands of permanent jobs. That's the downfall of society. :coffee:
