Pats Comp Picks

The Pats should trade a couple 6's for a 4. I don't think the loss of a 1 is really that much of a punishment. How often do 1's really work out for the money? Two's and 3's are good picks.

Yeah the guys BB has picked at #1 are teh suck.

Richard Seymour, Ty Warren, Vince Wilfolk, Logan Mankins, Jerod Mayo, Devin McCourty, Chandler Jones, Dont'a Hightower.

The jury's still out on Dominique Easley and Malcom Brown, but they have a chance to be very good as well.

His "misses" include the following.

Daniel Graham, Benjamin Watson, Laurence Maroney, Brandon Meriweather, and Nate Solder.

Of those the only true "miss", IMHO is Meriweather.

So that's 8 solid hits, 5 "misses" and 2 yet to be determined.

I don't consider Solder a miss. He's been the starter since year 2 and we saw how much he was missed after his injury last season.
Graham was a solid contributor during his time here.
Maroney at least had a couple of productive seasons.
Watson and Merriweather were misses, although at least both stayed in the league for an extended period of time.

I see this a lot. If a guy is still in the league after 6 or 7 years, he is a hit. He might not be a fit for a particular scheme, the money might be an issue or maybe personalities don't mix. But, a guy with a 5 year or more career surely must be considered a real NFL player and therefor a hit.

I agree subroc. I think the only one who is what I would call a "miss" out of those OPT mentioned was Maroney.
I mean, we have first rounders out there like Ryan Leaf and Jamarcus Russell, it's hard to put Maroney in that class. Maybe I'd put him in the Tebow class. Had some shining moments but was mostly meh.

Was Meriweather really a bust?

He has played 9 years in the NFL. He is 32 years old. That pretty much equates to a full career. He went to 2 pro bowls. Now we can surely debate if he deserved them, but he was selected none the less. He might not have been great but I wouldn't characterize him a bust. 9 YEARS!

I guess I was't clear.

I think it is fair to say that the first group of guys I listed are/were genuine stud players. I don't think anyone would dispute that.

The second group is more open for debate, and reasonable people may disagree how good any of them are/were.

IMHO, only Meriweather was a complete bust for NE.

So my list was intentionally conservative to prove the point that BB has done pretty good in the first round

Did you mean Maroney?

As a Pat...he was a bust. Yes.

No I meant Meriweather was a bust for New England.

I don't care what he's done elsewhere in the league, he sucked for us.

Exactly...

Meriweather did not suck as a Patriot player. That is an absurd characterization. In his 3 years after his rookie year, he had a dozen INTs and in those 3 years he had 61, 53 and 49 tackles respectivly.

I am not sayin' he was the 2nd coming of Rodney Harrison or anything like that but he far from sucked.

Awesome, I am sitting here defending Brandon Meriwearther. What has my life become?

I'm with you, Subroc. Not a fan of the dude, but he does not fit my definition of bust as a Patriot or elsewhere.

You should ask why BB didn't give a shit about re-signing him...:coffee:

Merriwether makes Brandon Browner look smart for making dumbass penalties and whiffing on big plays.

Clearly, we are still in this year and the future will take care of itself, but between losses and signings, it doesn't look like any comp pics next year. At least nothing stands out.
