Indianapolis Colts safety Bob Sanders has signed a five-year, $37.5 million contract with the Colts that includes $20 million in guaranteed money, according to NFL sources.

The contract makes Sanders the highest-paid safety in the NFL.

Sanders, whose playoff performance sparked the Colts on their run to a Super Bowl victory last season, would have been an unrestricted free agent after this season.

Chris Mortensen covers the NFL for ESPN.

KenJr - do you think that he's worth the most money out of all the safeties in the NFL?

I mean, Bob's a firecracker, but I'd still take Ed Reed every day of the week.

Polian is a lot of things, but a miser isn't one of them.

Without question. He is a game changer. As Dungy has mentioned in the past, he makes up for a lot of the other defenders mistakes. Dungy has nicknamed him the "erasure".

Never doubt the Polian.

I love Bob Sanders but I was hoping they'd lose him. I know - it was a pipe dream - but still...

Well, obviously my trust is in Piolichick. lol.

I don't doubt that Sanders is a game changer.. but I'm just not willing to say he's the best safety in the game, which apparently Polian feels that he is.

Congrats on the signing, anyway. :)

Sanders is one of the best no question....I would take him here when Harrison hang em up....lol.

20 mill guaranteed for a guy who has missed alot of time via injury is a big investment imo...not saying he isnt worth it, but just a heavy price is all

Because he's like a 80's pop band?

Ya know, popular for the moment, but then gonna fade into obscurity.

I thought it was because of their mutual love of this song:

The term "highest paid" or "overpaid" in the NFL can be a misleading one, dependent upon what the owners surmise the cap rising to in future years.

I guess it could have been worse....he could have nicknamed him Bronski Beat....

Sanders hasn't even averaged 10 games a year. He's a great player no question but in a team that already has a cap creaking at the seams that's a lot of money to sink into him.

Especially since Dallas Clark is also coming up for a new contract. And if they have to tag Clark he'll be a huge hit on the cap as well.

The end result will be the quality of the Colts backups will drop off. Better not have as many injuries next year.

Amazing how people say the Colts cap situation is going to implode every single season. Tarik Glenn and Corey Simon will be coming off the books. Dallas Clark will be re-signed.

I predict that Manning will sign an extension this offseason, and provide tons of future cap relief.

What are you going to do with that sig once the playoffs begin?

Sanders is a hell of a safety when healthy. He got his paycheck. Good for him. The cap goes up next year and although the Colts cap situation is not all that warm and fuzzy that some have said, they will have the room.

Best safety in the league, though? Personally I too like Ed Reed, too. Or Brian Dawkins.
