Week 3 Game Thread- New England at NY Jets @1:00 PM

Bo Jackson was drafted first overall by Tampa Bay in 1986 (after he went back for his senior season), and he decided to play baseball instead. He did not report to Tampa Bay. He was then eligible for the draft the next year, and the Raiders drafted him.

The player is eligible to be drafted every year, so long as someone spends a draft pick on him. If he goes through the entire draft undrafted, then he is a free agent.

But...surely the draft is not the only way into the league in that scenario? So Bo did not have to re-enter the draft after that year off surely? He could have just chosen his team and walked in the door as a FA?

Unless he was drafted, which he was.

That makes sense.

No. He was drafted. When he didn't report to Tampa Bay by the end of the league year, they lost his rights, but he was put into the draft again, because he was drafted the first time.

You don't get to be a FA, unless you go through the entire draft of your eligible draft year (12 rounds back then), undrafted.
The reason he lasted so long in the 87 draft, is because most teams (mistakenly) thought he was just going to play baseball only.

Caleb Williams has a ton of leverage. 1) He's only a junior, he would have to 'declare hardship' to be eligible for the draft as a junior. If it's the Jets or Cardinals in the #1 spot, he can just say 'fuck it' and go back for his senior year (and possibly go after Heisman #3, and a real shot at a Natty). So if he goes back for his senior year, he will have to be in the 2025 draft, and whomever drafts him will have his rights. He can choose not to report, but if he does that, the team that has his rights can trade his rights (like what happened with Eli Manning/John Elway), or he can just not play for a year like Bo Jackson did. But he would still be entered in the 2026 draft, unless for some reason he went undrafted.

You can't be a FA in the NFL, unless you go through the entire draft undrafted, you've completed your rookie contract, or you're cut by the team that drafted you.

It is still stunning to me that Brock Purdy was Mr. Irrelevant.

Everyone always says guys won't go into the draft if X team might pick them. In recent times, it has never happened. Guys won't turn down generational money just to return to college and possibly get hurt and lose all of that.

Jets getting him would be worst case scenario so everyone taking joy in the Jets' dysfunction might do well to remember that. Would be a very Jete thing to do, lose your starter, then luck into a potential generational talent. They will probably screw him up, but you just never know. That should frighten Pats fans.

Bruh. Andrew Luck went back to Stanford for his senior season because the Jets had the first pick.
