The 2021 Draft- We Need This One

This is a few days old, but it caught my eye and gives a little insight into how BB (and other head coaches) make draft and FA choices that seem to be a reach or overpay based on what that player has shown. Key excerpt:

Belichick was asked Thursday, would he ever take a quarterback at a spot in the draft that was not befitting that quarterback's grade?

Put differently, would Belichick "overdraft" a quarterback he likes (but maybe doesn't love), knowing that he may not have a crack at said quarterback if he waits for the point in the draft where that player's grade and New England's draft position are more closely aligned?

"I think that question really applies to every position on the board," Belichick said. "There are players that, if you just grade them on what they’ve done or what their production has been over the course of their career, you’re not going to get that player.

"If you see the player’s upside and development and growth, and you pay a much higher price for the player than what his production shows [it's] because you feel that, in time -- or [with more] experience or [in a] different system or whatever the combination of reasons are -- that the player will perform above what his production was in college.

"Could be injury-related, could be, as I said, scheme-related, could be, just the physical development of the player. Those are always things that you talk about. You’re obviously betting on the come there. You’re betting on the player’s development versus what you might actually see from another player. But in some cases the upside might be greater and the downside might be greater, too. But at some point you decide to make that investment and then we all see how the player turns out.

It's not his normal method of non-answer, but make no mistake about it: that was a non-answer to the question asked.

I like your late round trades into next year since this year those late rounders won't be the quality bc of the small number of players in this draft.
Next year something like 2,000 players will go out for the draft.

I heard on SiriusXM NFL that a 5th round pick this year would only be a 7th rnd pick next year. Either Gil Brandt or Pat Kirwan said it; can't remember now.
Brandt

Lombardi always has good info & he's a connected guy because he doesn't talk out of school. Many years ago I had issues with him but I have since come around that it was a me problem & that he really is a good dude.
That's dreadful stereotype against Italian-Americans.

Blank is saying he wants a QB at pick #4 because he does not know when the Falcons are ever going to be picking that high again. I wonder if they are targeting Lance.

Anyone see this?

SupposedLy from the desk of a Packers exec:

On the paper, it has the date of the draft and the details of a trade between the Patriots and the Packers. In the description it has the Packers trading Jordan Love (1st round QB last year from Utah State), their 1st round pick this year (29th overall) and a 4th round pick to the Patriots for their 1st round pick this year (15th overall).

What do you make of this?

I don't know anything about anything and especially that QB, but the trade seems like a good one to me. What position was he drafted in?

Answered my own question. He was drafted at 26.

Jordon Love

Overview
Utah State was the only FBS program to offer Love a scholarship despite his excellent play at Liberty High School in Bakersfield (2,148 yards, 24 passing touchdowns; 806 rushing yards, eight rushing touchdowns). He looked like a future NFL starter while earning second-team All-Mountain West honors for the Aggies in 2018. Love ranked eighth in the FBS with 32 touchdown passes in 13 starts (267 of 417, 64.0 completion percentage, school single-season record 3,567 yards, six interceptions). His statistical production declined in 2019, garnering just honorable mention All-MWC honors as he threw an FBS-high 17 interceptions on the year (293 of 473, 62.0 completion percentage, 3,402 yards, 20 touchdowns; 81 carries, 175 yards, 2.2 ypc). Love showed glimpses of his talent as a redshirt sophomore in 2017, starting six of 12 games played (129 of 235, 54.9 completion percentage, 1,631 yards, eight touchdowns, six interceptions). Love was cited for marijuana possession in December but the case was dismissed in January.
Strengths
  • Tall in the pocket and smooth, natural thrower
  • Keeps ball tucked and secure while scanning the field
  • Tight spirals come from a variety of arm slots
  • Offenses built upon intermediate and deep reads/throws
  • Confident passer attacking between the hashes
  • Makes athletic pocket exits when scrambling
  • Good open-field vision and speed to move the sticks
  • Arm strength to dime it into windows
  • Drops deeps balls in with plenty of air and touch
  • In 2018, trusted big receivers to make plays on 50/50s
  • Arm talent and swagger to attack field side Cover 2 hole
  • Has access to expedited, compact release when pressured
Weaknesses
  • Consistency and production took massive step backward in 2019
  • Looping windup part of slower operation time
  • Too much staring and telegraphing
  • Six games with multiple interceptions, including three pick-sixes
  • Below-average decision-making against zone looks
  • Allowed coverage to swarm due to lack of anticipation
  • Unusually spotty ball placement forced targets to work for catches
  • Completed just 31.8 percent of his deep throws
  • Doesn't slide to safer launch points enough
  • Will void viable pockets at times
  • Needs to use eyes to hold safeties longer
  • Issues bringing in off-target snaps, leading to fumbles

Rather have ARodgers.
I'd love to see Rodgers in a more structured system like the Pats.

Trey Lance had a very good Pro Day yesterday.

I would never want Rodgers. He would pout and cry to the media as soon as Bill called him out in one meeting for a poor throw or read. He has zero leadership skills and with the young team Bill is looking at rebuilding he is the last person I would want influencing them with his selfish "stats mean everything to me" attitude.

BTW, from all accounts and repots, LaFleur is doing a fantastic job in GB. There is plenty of structure and buy in from the players. Their front office hit a home run with LaFleur. If they got to play the Saints instead of the red hot Bucs last year they are in the Super Bowl with a real chance to upset the beat up Chiefs.

You can have Love or JimmyG. I'll take Rodgers and we'll see which team has the most wins.

Think more clearly.
