Slater calls it quit after 16 years

We all pretty much knew this was coming. He was a special player, and he was on maybe the only team that would keep a guy like him around, just for special teams, for 16 years.

Hope the next chapter of his life is just as special.

I don't think we'll see another STer quite like him in the next generation or two of the NFL. Hope he gets to join his dad in Canton.

Now that it's official I await the Pats making him an offer to stay connected to the team whether as an ST coach, a chaplain or whatever. Just find something unless
Matt himself wants to take some time off but Matt Slater is definitely a guy you want around your people and in your building.

When every guy he comes in contact with says how special of a human being he is then there is no reason to doubt that.

I like the idea of moving on from the past, but there is certainly no need to disassociate from all of it because the past of this team is extremely special and
if used wisely can help make the future special as well. I'll be very curious to see what his next phase will look like, but I hope it is here.

Damn straight. The team MUST keep Slates on in some capacity. He's so well-liked and respected; I can't see it not happening.

What a fantastic human being. I love the friendship he built up with Jules when they were struggling as rookies and were day to day about whether they would get cut.

Nice write up of Slater on Barstool by our very own IG_IG:

In other disturbing news, James Ferentz announced his retirement.
It's going to be difficult to replace him.

Bill Belichick statement on Matthew Slater: “Matthew Slater deserves every accolade someone could receive. He is a once in a lifetime person, and the best core special teams player in NFL history. His daily, weekly, and yearly work ethic, paved the way for his unsurpassed performance. Matthew is the finest example of what an intense competitor and human being should be. He has been a great role model for the teams players & coaches) that I have coached. Matthew is exceedingly kind, and supremely loved and respected by all his peers. I am one of many who feel incredibly blessed to be his teammate, coach, and friend.”

Absolutely useless player. Listed as a WR and has (I think) one reception. Yet they kept him on the roster for all that time, when they could have had an All Pro like N'keal Harry or Chad Jackson. No wonder we only won six Super Bowls.
Well. that's just Belicheat for you.. 🤷

One of the young women on Patriots Unfiltered said, paraphrasing, “Slater makes you want to be better person “.
