Hey all,

I know we just got here, so I am not looking to change the software right away, but I started looking into where it would make sense to go when we are ready. As you know, this version 4 of vb, while newer and slicker than the vb3 site we left, is still end of life and not supported.

I had set up a vb5 version site here: https://www.patriotsplanet.net/vb5 for us to test before the move.

Well, today I messed around and think I found a better path for us to upgrade to. If you don't know, VB was THE forum software in the last 20 years. It served us well. The company that originally wrote it, Jellsoft, was bought out by Internet Brands. A lot of those developers were ousted and IB came out with vb5, which was a disaster at launch. I was not too impressed with our test site.

Well, many of those developers formed a new company - Xenforo. Its modern, its responsive, its updated, and kind of more expensive. Supports many of the later things and I think it may be the direction we want to go. Tons of current mods and support. While being new, a lot of the feel is the same as vBulletin. But not all.

I made a copy of our database this morning and installed a test version of Xenforo and imported all of our vbulletin data. I made some style updates to make it look more like home, but only very basic ones. There is a ton more customization we can do. You should be able to login with the same credentials. It kind of reminds me of if you combined vbulletin with the Discourse software I have Boston Sports Uproar on.

Check it out here: https://www.patriotsplanet.net/xb/

No time table for the change. I am in no rush, just kind of planning where it would make sense to go for future upgrades. We are just getting used to vb4 after all, so this can wait for some time.

But I'd love to hear your thoughts if you are bored and want to play around with it.

i just posted there and after a preview didn't get an error message

Don't know if it's something you'd be able to sort of it's just a restriction of the board software, but on VB, the width of the forum scales to your monitor size where as the other seems to be a set value, I'm lucky enough to have 27" (1920x1080) and 31" (2560x1440) monitors, and whilst it's less noticeable on the 27" monitor, there is a lot of empty space on either side, appears to be around 1200px across.

It's a very, very minor nitpick, but just something I noticed.

Ooh, thanks for mentioning it. I'm surprised it doesn't autoscale by default, but I am sure it can. It's written with all kinds of css. I will look into it.

As a regular at bsu, I'd be curious to see what you think as some of the responsive stuff seems similar.

This looks pretty slick, UT. What about videos and gifs and twitter copies?
Does it have a casino?

I haven't tried yet, but I saw some that we had posted here show up. I willing to bet it's slicker.

Plus, every post has a share button at the top right to share to your Twitter, Facebook, pintrest, Tumblr, reddit, email, whatsapp, or link.

Just tested both Twitter and Giphy links from mobile. Absolutely seemless displaying them inline.

Nice! Now what about a casino?

in mobile i do not see an easy way to jump to the latest or last page of posts...otherwise it looks fine

I have found BSU to be relatively glitch-free so far. I think I may insert more GIFs and pictures here though. Slight peeve, on BSU when inserting an image from my computer sometimes it makes it humongous. The game thread lineups is a good example.

So...

For the default mobile interface. It knows when you have something unread and bolds the thread. When you click on it, it automatically brings you to your first unread post.

If you've read the thread or want to go to specific pages, you have to open the thread and scroll to the bottom. You can click on the page number indicator to put in the page you want to go to.

Being able to click on a link and have it open with doing the "right click and open in a new window" is a nice feature, good job UT!

Just went to the Nostalgic Music Thread - videos are not showing up for me (and I made sure I was logged in). Just the text for the iframe tags. Probably just a configuration detail, but thought you would want to know.

Thank you. Yes, it must be a config issue. Natively out of the box it should display all of these...

I will take a look tomorrow when I am on desktop.

I think this is corrected now. I thought there would be a dynamic width option, but what I found was a maximum width, and you guessed right, it was 1200px. I changed it to like 5000px

So its kind of weird. It works flawlessly on new posts. I can just post a youtube link (no embed code needed) and it displays inline fine. I can hit the Insert Media button and paste the regular link and it works fine. The older posts though, still just show the links. Until I go to edit them. Without changing anything, if I edit and close, the iframe links work as well.

EDIT

Ah well, that explains that. Working as designed: "The auto-embedding is done only at post time."
