I could have sworn we used to have one of these but it must have been another board. Anyway, this is a thread to share any memories of the old school wrestlers.

I was going through some of my old stuff and came across a wrestling program from when a wrestling promotion came to my hometown back in the 80s and it really jogged some memories. I pretty much watched up to the late 90's when I kind of grew out of it.

I had autographs from all sorts of wrestlers on that program but didn't recognize many. The ones I still remember were The Missing Link and Rick McCord. Link had himself a pretty big career but McCord was nothing more than a Ric Flair knockoff that kind of bounced around the Midwest promotions. I still remember reading that program and that was the first I had heard about King Kong Bruiser Brody being killed in Mexico.

I remember watching wrestling on UHF station (channel 56 in boston area... or was it 38?). the WWWF as it was known then. Chief Jay Strongbow! I chuckle because I knew it was dumb then but funny and entertaining. I grew out of it, and was then surprised to see it become such a big thing.

I remember my grandparents having one of those gigantic satellite dishes. I would spend hours going through his huge guide making a list of times that every wrestling show was on. I was able to catch a pretty wide assortment of promotions back then. WCCW, NWA, AWA, WWF.

I'm not a wrestling fan even a little bit bu my friend big Dan, and I mean big was brought into the professional wrestling world, was close friends with and even attended the funeral of Killer Kowalski.

He knew and hung with Andre and all of the guys. Told me Andre was so big he used to lay massive turds in the bathtub in his hotel rooms cuz he was way to big for the commode.

Some fascinating stories he has told me.

From the funeral. He's on the left.

Here's the old thread.

When I was in high school I worked at Howard Johnson's on the MA Pike and had the pleasure of waiting on Andre the Giant. He took up two stools on the counter where I was working. He ordered a cheeseburger, fries and a cola. Left a one dollar tip and signed a napkin for me.

Grew up on the Attitude Era and enjoyed it as a kid. I find the current product unwatchable.

Thanks!! I thought there was a thread but I'll be damned if I could find it. Can't believe Andre only ordered one cheeseburger. Must have been a light snack.

The fat bastard was even bigger when he wrestled. He still doesn't eat well and runs hot dog carts now. And he wonders why his health is failing.

Big dummy.

I wanted to put on the tights and step into the squared circle. Would have loved to be a heal. but no I was not discovered at any of the matches I went to.

Broke my nose doing the superfly dive off a bar one night - lesson learned was when they don't expect it the knees come up, blood every where.

Sorry. I should have warned you about that. I hate blood.

Cheers

Anyone remember "Argentina" Rocca? He was the first rassler that I took notice of. I seem to remember him as a ring rope acrobat and a airborn specialist. Seemed he was always flying across the tiny TV screen in Morrisville, Vt., on Saturdays where I summered as a child.

I was a big wrestling fan as my Mother, quite incongrously if you knew what she was like, took me to see Bruno Sammartino at the old Garden and I followed rasslin' for years.

In fact, right as the Hulk Hogan era peaked my cousin had a Wrestlemania watching party at his house and requested that all attendees come in costume. My wife made me a "Godfather" outfit complete with fake dreads and she came to the party dressed up as one of my "hos". His basement had been draped with tarps that were spray painted like an alley and there were props like ladders, folding chairs and trash cans that, yes, were used.

As an aside, his son was about 12 at the time and he and his friends just couldn't believe what they were seeing. They thought we were insane, which was understandable. One of those kids was Anthony Sherman who is now a pretty good fullback/St'er for the KC Chiefs.

I only occasionally tune in now just to see what's going on and it ain't the same but for a while there it was one hell of an entertaining show.

BTW, there are a couple of great Netflix docus on the Iron Sheik and Jake the Snake Roberts, etc., that are really well done and watching those brought back some good memories for me. Worth watching.

I mark the day when wrestling started going downhill as right around the time Vince MacMahon paid for his daughter Stephanie to get fake boobs. I thought that was a bit much.

Used to go watch the matches at the Garden in the 70s. Bruno, Pedro, Andre, the Shiek, chief J, George, Gorilla Monsoon, Ivan Koloff, Turo Tanaka and Mr. Fuji. Chief J was my favorite back then. Watch him get beat up for 10 minute or so, then the war dance started, hilarious. In the 80's and early nineties, The Nature boy, and Arn Anderson. Never really got the Sting love. Don't watch the new stuff.

I have been going to the garden since the mid 70's.

Always had good seats, used to root for Greg Valentine because we called my older brother "the hammer" and that was good for getting trash raining down from the gallery gods, including cans.

saw Jessie the body beat Tony atlas and as he left a guy stuck a pen into the shoulder of the body who turned, looked at the pen and blood and kept walking.

Bruno vs Larry Zbyszko were great matches.

Local guys like the Boston Brawler sucked, same with Pete Doherty but they made the show for the night as a whipping boy filler under-card match.

Killer Kowlawski had the school in Malden that Chyna and Triple H went to to get there big break. i remember working the area and seeing all the roid freaks

so many fun nights watching at the garden then Foxboro had a Wrestlemania, i think, that I like to take credit for starting the cup throwing incident.
